Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks got three points from Oliver Gabriel as they opened preseason action Friday with a 4-1 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds in a game played in Everett, Washington.

Portland dominated much of the game, outshooting Seattle 55-24. Twenty-two of those shots came in the first period, with two of them beating Thunderbirds netminder Michael Salmon. The first was an unassisted shorthanded goal by Gabriel 3:58 into the game, followed 35 seconds later by another shorthanded tally, that one by Liam Darragh on an assist by Gabriel.

Those two combined once again just 18 seconds into the second period on Gabriel's second goal of the game, with assists to Darragh and Nic Petan, the team's first round pick in the 2010 Bantam Draft.

The Thunderbirds got on the board midway through the frame when Charles Wells scored an unassisted power play goal to make it 3-1, but that would be the only goal allowed by the Winterhawks.

Portland took the two-goal lead into the third period, and made it 4-1 at the 2:05 mark on a goal by Ty Rattie to close the scoring.

Mac Carruth saw the bulk of the action in net for Portland, stopping 19 of 20 shots in just under 50 minutes, while Keith Hamilton turned away all four shots he saw in just over 10 minutes. Seattle split the goaltending duties almost evenly between Salmon and Matt Krahn, with Salmon stopping 25 of 28 shots and Krahn turning away 26 of 27.

The Winterhawks continue play in Everett tomorrow when they take on the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League at 3 p.m.
