Winterhawks Issue Health & Safety Updates
August 25, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks, proud member club of the Western Hockey League, announced several health and safety updates today for fans planning to attend upcoming games at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Effective September 1, guests of the campus ages 12 and up will be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Proof will be required at entry, with acceptable forms being:
A CDC or Canadian Vaccination Card
A photocopy of a Vaccination Card
A photo of a Vaccination Card on a Mobile Device
"We, along with the Rose Quarter and the Portland Trail Blazers all agree that the health and safety of our community is a top priority," remarked Winterhawks Vice President/General Manager/Head Coach Mike Johnston. "While this is certainly not an ideal reality, the spread of the Delta variant and potential risk to unvaccinated children made this a necessary resolution."
Attendees must have received their second dose in a two-dose series or a single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, at least two weeks prior to the game or event.
For those who cannot provide proof of vaccination, documentation of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of puck drop will also be accepted. Ticket holders with religious or medical exemptions are not subject to the vaccine requirement but must satisfy the alternative testing option. Rose Quarter will not be providing on-site testing for ticket holders.
Children under the age of 12 will be exempt from the vaccine requirement and alternative testing option.
The Western Hockey League announced a policy last week requiring all WHL roster players, hockey operations staff, team/office personnel and officials to be fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to the start of the 2021-22 WHL Regular Season. The WHL Regular Season opens Friday, October 1.
In addition to players, the mandatory vaccination policy applies to General Managers, Coaches, Head Scouts or Director of Player Personnel, Trainers, Equipment Managers, On-Ice and Off-Ice Consultants, On-Ice Officials and ice level off-ice officials (penalty box attendants, time keepers and scorekeepers) and any other individuals who interact directly and on a regular basis with players.
All fans and staff will also be required to wear masks inside Veterans Memorial Coliseum - in accordance with the Multnomah County mandate issued on August 13. The only acceptable time fans may remove their mask is while actively eating or drinking.
Three new policies put in place by the Rose Quarter that will also be applicable at Winterhawks home game are the following:
No Bag Policy - Bags will no longer be allowed in the arena to limit contact and wait times. Exclusions will apply for medical needs, children's bags and clutches.
Cash-Free Campus - Eliminating cash will allow for reduced contact and shorter wait times. Kiosks will be placed around campus to convert cash to a prepaid debit card for no fee.
Smoke-Free Campus - There will no longer be an outdoor smoking section anywhere on campus.
The above policies are subject to change at a later date.
