Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks (15-16-0-0) overcame a four-goal deficit in the second period, but fell 6-4 on the road Tuesday to the Tri-City Americans (13-18-1-0).

Tri-Cities scored four times in the first period on goals from Brian Williams, Tyler Sandhu and a pair from Jordan Topping as they held a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Despite the deficit, the Hawks stormed back with four second period goals to even the game.

Portland chipped away at the deficit early in the second, and got on the board just 1:29 into the frame when Cody Glass took a feed from Alex Schoenborn and scored from the slot to make it 4-1. Just over three minutes later, reigning WHL Player of the Week Rihards Bukarts fed a pass to Blake Heinrich at the doorstep, who knocked it in to cut the Americans' lead in half at 4-2.

Midway through the period with Portland on a penalty kill, Schoenborn scored his second shorthanded goal in four games and brought the Hawks back within one, 4-3. Then late in the frame at the 17:21 mark, Dominic Turgeon brought the puck into the Tri-Cities zone on a rush and fired a shot that beat Americans netminder Evan Sarthou to erase the deficit and tie the contest at 4-4 going into the third.

It remained tied until the Americans' Parker Wotherspoon and Jordan Roy scored goals 21 seconds apart to take a 6-4 lead at 6:50 of the third period. The Hawks staged a late rally trying to once again come back, but the Americans hung on for the two-goal win.

Portland's big second period was keyed by Schoenborn, who was in on the first three markers in the period with a goal and two assists. That second period breakout continued his recent hot streak, as he has 11 points over his last four games, with at least three points in three of the four games.

One day after being named the WHL Player of the Week, Bukarts kept rolling Tuesday, registering two assists to extend his point streak to eight games. With at least one point in every game this month, Bukarts is up to 13 points in eight games in December.

The Hawks will play in Spokane Friday and Saturday before the players leave town for the league's holiday break. Saturday's game will be seen live on Portland's CW32.
