Wheat Kings Host Blazers Tonight
December 16, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings will be hoping for a carbon copy of Saturday night's performance when they play host to the visiting Kamloops Blazers tonight at Westman Communications Group Place.
The Wheat Kings, who opened up this 3-game Western Hockey League homestand with a disappointing loss to Lethbridge on Friday night, bounced back the following night in scoring one of, if not their best wins of the season - a 5-1 victory over the defending champion Kelowna Rockets.
With the win, coupled with back to back losses by the Prince Albert Raiders, leaves the Wheat Kings sitting atop the Eastern Division with a record of 19-10-1-2.
Tonight's game, Brandon's final pre-Christmas home game, will be the first of three games over the course of the next four nights. With three of their top players currently away with their respective National Junior Teams, veteran Braylon Shmyr knows that other players need to take on more responsibility this week.
"If anyone is out of the lineup, a lot of guys have to step up," Shmyr told Perry Bergson of the Brandon Sun this week. "We just have to play our game and a lot harder."
After missing twelve games earlier this season, Shmyr enters the game with four goals and eight points in 20 games.
Meanwhile the 15-10-3-1 Blazers enter the game as one of the league's hottest teams in recent weeks, after collecting at least a point in all but one of their games during the month of November.
After losing their first six games, the Blazers came on after the acquisition of Gage Quinney from Kelowna in mid October. A former Kelowna Rocket, Quinney has 37 points and is currently sitting among the WHL scoring leaders.
"They've been one of the better teams likely from the middle of October on," Brandon's interim head coach David Anning told the Sun. "They've started to put some wins together and they're likely one of the hardest-working teams that we're going to face so it's going to be a good challenge."
Game time Wednesday, which is the first of two Rain Check games of the season, is 7pm. Fans can exchange any unused 2015-16 Wheat King ticket for a "free" ticket to this game. Fans are also being encouraged to bring a new unwrapped toy or nonperishable food donation for the 31st Annual Westman and Area Traditional Christmas Dinner.
The Wheat Kings will close out their pre-Christmas schedule this weekend with back to back road games in Swift Current and Prince Albert against the Broncos and second place Raiders respectively.
