Winterhawks Fall 4-0 To Spokane Friday

The Portland Winterhawks dropped a 4-0 decision at home to the Spokane Chiefs Friday.

Spokane got on the board first when Mitch Wahl fired a shot top shelf past Winterhawks netminder Ian Curtis to make it 1-0 4:56 into the game. The Chiefs then made it 2-0 at the 7:07 mark when Kyle Beach scored his league-leading 49th goal of the season, a score that would remain through the end of the period.

The Chiefs extended their lead to 3-0 7:43 into the second period when Anthony Bardaro brought the puck out from behind Portland's net to the right faceoff circle and put a shot past Curtis. The goal would stand as the lone tally of the second period.

Spokane added one more with 2:36 remaining in the game on a goal by Steve Kuhn to finish with a 4-0 victory.

Prior to the game the Winterhawks handed out their annual team awards. Chris Francis took home both the MVP and Leading Scorer Award, while Nino Niederreiter captured Rookie of the Year and was the fans' choice for Most Popular Player. Stefan Schneider won the Robert R. Boss Memorial Best Defensive Player Award, the Bill Anderson Memorial Trophy for Sportsmanship & Ability and shared the Scholastic Player of the Year Award with Seth Swenson.

The Winterhawks are back on the ice tomorrow when they host the Tri-City Americans at the Rose Garden at 7 p.m. It's Hall of Fame night, as the Winterhawks will be inducting former owner and general manager Brian C. Shaw, former general manager and head coach and current adviser Ken Hodge and former player Dennis Holland into the Hall of Fame. In addition, former trainer Innes Mackie will be awarded the inaugural Brian C. Shaw Award for meritorious service to the organization.
