Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings closed out a 5-game Western Hockey League home stand Friday night with a convincing 9-2 victory over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors before over 5,500 hungry fans at Westman Place.
Scott Glennie had two goals and two assists to lead the Wheat Kings, who moved three points up on the idle Saskatoon Blades in the battle for top spot in the WHL's Eastern Division.
Aaron Lewadniuk added a goal and three assists for the winners, who erupted for five unsanswered second period goals to wipe out a 2-1 first period deficit.
Matt Calvert, Brayden Schenn, Jordan Hale, Colby Robak, Brent Raedeke and Michael Ferland also scored goals for the Wheat Kings, who finished the home stand with a 4-1-0 record.
Jay Fehr, who was playing in his 250th career game Friday night, added three assists in the victory.
"We were kind of fighting it a bit in the first part of the game," Fehr told Bruce Luebke of CKLQ during Friday's post-game show. "I think once that second goal went in, we started to get pucks deep and pucks to the net."
With the win, all fans in attendance received a "free" Wheat Kings' breakfast at Smittys Restaurants in Brandon. The crowd of 5,518 also pushed Brandon's all time single season attendance record to 159,292. With two home games remaining in the 2009-10 regular season, the Eastern Division leaders are averaging close to 4,700 fans per game.
Friday's game marked the first time since January's Trade Deadline that all star defenceman Travis Hamonic has taken to the ice to face his former club. The 19-year old St. Malo product, who was held off the scoresheet, was acquired from Moose Jaw in exchange for rookie blueliner Dallas Ehrhardt and three bantam draft picks.
Next action for Brandon is Sunday night when they visit the Prince Albert Raiders, before returning home to face the Warriors again on Wednesday. That game is Rain Check Night at Westman Place, which means any unused ticket (since Christmas) can be exchanged at the box office for a free ticket to this game (regular Ticketmaster agency fees apply).
