Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks (9-7-1-1) continued their road trip in Kamloops Wednesday with a 4-2 win over the Blazers (11-4-0-0).

Portland took an early lead just 57 seconds into the game when Charles Wells scored his second of the season to give the Hawks a 1-0 advantage. The Blazers evened the game late in the first when Colin Smith scored a power play goal at the 18:41 mark to even the game at 1-1 going into the second period.

The Winterhawks regained the lead 2:39 into the second when defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon scored on a slapshot for his second goal of the season. Then at the 6:23 mark the Hawks made it 3-1 when Sven Bartschi scored in his first game back since October 18, Portland's last home game before the trip.

Kamloops got back within one when Logan McVeigh scored a shorthanded goal at the 10:37 mark of the second to cut Portland's lead to 3-2, which would remain the score going into the third period.

The Hawks' lead remained at one through most of the third, as the Hawks controlled play through much of the frame, allowing Kamloops to take just seven shots on net. Ty Rattie scored a power play goal at the 16:44 mark to put the Hawks up 4-2, which would stand as the final.

Portland had a big edge in shots in the game, outshooting Kamloops 44-28. Portland netminder Mac Carruth made 26 saves on 28 shots, while Blazers goaltender Cole Cheveldave stopped 40 of the 44 Portland shots he faced.

Bartschi finished with three points with a goal and two assists, while Rattie had a goal and an assist.

The Winterhawks play the final two games of their nine-game trip with back-to-back games in Kelowna against the Rockets Friday and Saturday.
