Winterhawks Announce 2017-18 Team Awards

Prior to the Winterhawks game against the Spokane Chiefs last night, Portland handed out their 2017-18 team awards. Five Winterhawks' players were recognized for their exceptional seasons both on-and-off the ice.

The Winterhawks "Most Valuable Player" award, as voted by the Winterhawks' players to the teammate who is most integral to team success, was awarded to forward Cody Glass.

Glass leads the team in points this season, with 101. He is the first Winterhawks player to reach the century mark in points since Oliver Bjorkstrand in 2015. Glass also plays an incredible two-way game, and is a key part of both the Hawks powerplay and penalty-kill, which both rank in the top-five in the WHL. This is the second straight season Glass was named Team MVP, as he and Caleb Jones both received the honor last year.

The Jann and Robert Boss "Best Defensive Player Award" was given to defenseman Henri Jokiharju. Jokiharju is in his second season with Portland. His 71 points on the year are the most a Winterhawks defenseman has recorded in a single season since Brandon Smith had 82 in the 1993-94 campaign. Jokiharju is also a team-leading plus 47, which ranks fifth in the WHL.

The award is named after Jann and Robert Boss. Robert Boss was one of the founders of the Winterhawks, facilitating the franchise's move from Edmonton to Portland in 1976. While Jann was an integral member of the front office for much of the franchise's history.

The Winterhawks "Rookie of the Year" award, was given to Mason Mannek. The 17-year old forward leads all Winterhawks rookies in goals, assists and points. His nine goals and 21 points rank him in the top 20 in the Western Hockey League among all rookies. Mannek has also shown his ability to score big goals, as six of his nine markers this season have come in the third period. Past winners of this award include Henri Jokioharju, Nic Petan, Nino Niederreiter, and Braydon Coburn.

The "Sportsmanship and Ability Award", given to the player who displays excellent sportsmanship, combined with quality play, was handed out to forward Conor MacEachern. The 19-year old forward is a leader both on-and-off the ice Portland. On his third-year with the Hawks, MacEachern has transitioned from defenseman to forward this year and put up career highs in goals, assists and points. Past winners of this award include Dominic Turgeon, Craig Cunningham, and Andrew Ference.

The "Scholastic Player of the Year", awarded to the player who displayed the excellence both in the classroom and on the ice, was given to rookie forward Mason Mannek.

The award for "Most Popular Player" as voted by the Winterhawks Booster Club, was award to Skyler McKenzie. It's the second straight season McKenzie has won this award.

The "Leading Scorer Award", given to the player with the most points at the end of the regular season, was awarded to Cody Glass. Glass had 101 points entering tonight's game, which ranks first on the Hawks and seventh in the WHL. It's the second straight season Glass has been Portland's leading scorer.

Skyler McKenzie was given the "Character, Leadership and Heart and Soul Award", as voted by the Winterhawks coaching staff.
