Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JUNE 1, 2011) - For the second straight night, Winston-Salem walked off a winner against the Potomac Nationals as Andy Wilkins scored from third base on a wild pitch in the tenth inning to send the Dash to a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark. It was the third straight win for Winston to clinch the series victory, and the Nationals were dealt their 11th straight defeat.
Wilkins snagged a line drive off the bat of Eury Perez to end the threat in the top of the tenth inning, and he walked to begin the home half of the inning. Nick Ciolli then dragged a bunt into no-man's land on the right side of the infield, advancing Wilkins to third. The umpires ruled that Wilkins beat the tag of Bloxom, much to the dismay of the Nationals. The first offer to the next batter Jason Bour was a wild pitch that scored Wilkins to end the game.
For the second straight night, pitcher's ruled the ballgame. Terry Doyle and Trevor Holder largely shut down the opposing offenses.
Potomac (18-34) got on the board against Doyle in the fourth inning. Destin Hood walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a single by Justin Bloxom. After Steven Souza advanced Hood to third, J.P. Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to put the P-Nats up 1-0. The run was unearned to Doyle, because Jason Bour was charged with an error on a dropped foul popup during Hood's plate appearance.
The Dash (24-28) responded in the sixth when Luis Sierra doubled to lead off the frame. Jake Oester followed with a double to tie up the game at one.
Holder left the game after the sixth inning, but Doyle continued and threw a career-high nine innings and gave up one unearned run on six hits and struck out seven. Both starters didn't get a decision as the game went into extra innings.
Reliever Taylor Thompson pitched the tenth for Winston, and walked the lead-off hitter Sandy Leon, who was then pulled for pinch runner J.R. Higley. Jose Lozada sacrificed Higley to second before Cutter Dykstra lined out. Eury Perez then hit a scorching line drive that Wilkins was able to snatch mid-air, retiring the P-Nats.
Thompson (4-1) got the win after the scoreless inning of relief, and reliever Josh Smoker (1-1) took the loss.
Winston-Salem and Potomac conclude their four-game series Thursday night at 7 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. RHP Andre Rienzo (1-1, 2.68) starts for the Dash against RHP Paul Demny (1-5, 4.66).
