Ballinger Promoted to Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JUNE 1, 2011) - The Winston-Salem Dash announced today that RHP J.R. Ballinger will join the team from low-A Kannapolis. There is no corresponding roster move at this time.

Ballinger first joined Winston-Salem on May 22 when LHP Hector Santiago was promoted to AA Birmingham. He threw three scoreless innings in relief and got the win against Salem. He allowed two hits and struck out three before returning to Kannapolis.

The Moss Point, MS native appeared in 12 games and made one start for low-A Kannapolis this season. He registered a 2-3 record with two saves and a 2.18 ERA in 20.2 innings for the Intimidators. Ballinger most recently threw on Tuesday against Hagerstown and allowed one run (earned) on two hits in 2.2 innings. One of the hits he gave up was a double to 2010 first overall draft pick Bryce Harper.

Ballinger spent 2010 in Kannapolis and went 0-5 with one save and a 3.13 ERA in 35 appearances. In his first 16 appearances, he didn't allow an earned run (23 IP, 20 K). Ballinger was originally drafted in the 11th round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Southern Mississippi. He earned Conference USA All-Freshman honors in 2007 after posting a 2.28 ERA in 21 appearances, and not allowing an extra-base hit all season.

The Dash roster sits at 24 players, one below the Carolina League limit.
