Extra Inning Heroics in Frederick

June 1, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

LF Kipp Schutz entered Wednesday night 0-for-9 at Harry Grove Stadium but by the end of the night he had two hits and the game-winning RBI. Schutz doubled off LHP Chad Bell in the bottom of the 11th and Bobby Stevens easily scored from second as the Keys won, 4-3. Frederick improved to 30-22 with the win while Myrtle Beach fell to 31-21.

RHP Bobby Bundy took the hill for the Keys in his tenth start of the season. The Pelicans struck first for the third consecutive night after 2B Santiago Chirino singled home 1B Mitch Hilligoss. Myrtle Beach added to the advantage with a Hillgoss solo homer in the fourth and a Ryan Strausborger solo blast in the fifth. Bundy still pitched effectively on the night allowing three runs on seven hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked one.

The Keys bats were silenced for the first six innings by Pelicans' starter RHP Wilfredo Boscan. Boscan allowed just three hits and struck out seven through the first six innings. Frederick finally got to the Myrtle Beach starter in the seventh. Kipp Schutz led off the inning with a single to left. DH Tyler Kolodny followed with a single and an error by CF Ryan Strausborger advanced them both into scoring position. RHP Joe Ortiz relieved Boscan and the first batter he faced was 3B Dale Mollenhauer. Mollenhauer drove in both runners with a single to centerfield. Three batters later, SS Garabez Rosa brought home Mollenhauer on an infield single to tie the game at three.

Wednesday night's game remained tied at three and entered extra innings. A big component for that was the dominant performance by the Keys bullpen. LHP Will Startup relieved Bundy in the seventh and tossed three scoreless innings. RHP Sean Gleason struck out two in a scoreless tenth and RHP Justin Moore fanned two in a scoreless 11th.

Bobby Stevens led off the bottom of the 11th with a single off RHP Johan Yan. Myrtle Beach then decided to bring in a lefty to face 1B Tyler Townsend. Townsend singled off Chad Bell and moved the winning run into scoring position. Kipp Schutz stepped to plate to face Bell with two on and no out. Schutz showed bunt twice but pulled back both times. The count sat at two balls and one strike when Schutz lined a Bell offering down the left field line. Stevens scored from second and the Keys prevailed 4-3. The win was Frederick's walk-off victory of the season.

Justin Moore picked up his first Carolina League victory while Johan Yan fell to 2-3.

Frederick and Myrtle Beach play the final game of the four-game series on Thursday night. LHP Nathan Moreau (5-3, 3.97) will toe the rubber for the Keys while the RHP Joe Wieland (5-3, 1.53) will oppose him. Wieland currently leads the Carolina League in ERA. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Thursday night is also Disney Night at Harry Grove Stadium. Throughout the evening there will be Disney song sing-a-longs as well as a Princess parade prior the game. For tickets call 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkeys.com.
