Pelicans Game Notes

June 1, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

RHP Wilfredo Boscan (0-2, 5.40) at RHP Bobby Bundy (5-3, 2.72)

ROSS-SOME!: Pelicans lefty Robbie Ross turned in Myrtle Beach's longest start of the season last night with eight innings. The eight frames with just an unearned run allowed tied a career-high for Robbie. He also went eight shutout innings for Hickory on June 1 last year, as he allowed a leadoff single before inducing a double play and retiring the final 23 men he faced. Ironically, the game-winning hit in that one was also a two-run base hit by catcher Zach Zaneski. As Ross did not allow an earned run last night, Robbie lowers his ERA to 2.48, seventh-best in the league. He becomes the first Carolina Leaguer to reach the six-win plateau in 2011, he was also the first to win five.

WHAT DO MAY FLOWERS BRING': As the Pelicans finished May with a win, they end with a 17-12 record for the month. That mark was the third-best in the league, behind only Kinston (18-10) and Frederick (19-11). The Birds' 2.98 ERA for the month was the lowest in the Carolina League.

THE RACE HEATS UP: After last night's win, the Pelicans sit atop the Southern Division with a mark of 31-20. Myrtle Beach holds a five-game lead over the 26-25 Kinston Indians. Even after losing this afternoon, the K-Tribe has won eight of their last ten and 12 of their last 15. The fading Salem Red Sox are are 5-18 in their last 23 and five and a half back. With only 19 games left in the first half, the Pelicans only need to tread water the rest of the way. Even with a 9-10 finish, the Indians would have to finish 14-5 to catch the Birds at 40-30. While 11 of the Pelicans' last 19 are on the road, only nine are against teams that currently hold a winning record (2 at FRE, 3 at KIN, 4 vs. FRE).
