Winston-Salem Dash News Release
BOWLING GREEN, KY - Behind a 2-run blast from Caberea Weaver, the Winston-Salem Dash topped the Bowling Green Hot Rods 5-3 Saturday night.
Following a leadoff walk from Terrell Tatum, his league-leading 27th steal of the season and a wild pitch from Bowling Green's Roel Garcia III, the Dash found themselves with no outs and a runner on third in the top of the first.
Winston-Salem couldn't capitalize on the early opportunity and stranded Tatum 90 feet away from a score. Brooks Gosswein toed the rubber for the Dash and ran into some trouble in the bottom of the first. He surrendered a solo shot to leadoff man Dru Baker, giving the Hot Rods an early 1-0 lead.
After Gosswein gave up a pair of singles, Willy Vasquez was able to knock a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Carson Williams and extend Bowling Green's lead to 2. Similar to Friday night's contest, the Dash seemed to have prompt responses to the Hot Rods.
In the top of the second, Weaver ripped a one-out single to left field to drive in Wes Kath from second and pull Winston-Salem within 1. Gosswein couldn't quite find his groove in the bottom of the frame, as Kenny Piper clubbed a leadoff double.
A wild pitch from Gosswein drove in Piper from third and gave Bowling Green a 3-1 advantage. Despite a double from DJ Gladney in the top of the third, the Dash couldn't manage any runs with one out.
Gosswein tightened up and retired the Hot Rods in order in the bottom of the third, and Winston-Salem caught fire shortly thereafter. Keegan Fish worked a two-out walk in the top of the fourth, and Weaver launched a 2-run bomb to right center field on the next at-bat to tie the game 3-3.
The long ball marked Weaver's second of the series, and his second with the Dash since being called up from Single-A May 24. Gosswein conceded another leadoff double in the bottom of the frame, but he remained calm and escaped unscathed.
The lefty's outing was concluded following four innings of five-hit, 3-run ball with a trio of punchouts. Jared Kelley entered in relief in the bottom of the fifth and kept the Hot Rods quiet. In the top of the sixth, the Dash were able to take advantage of Bowling Green reliever Over Galue's command struggles.
Galue walked Weaver and plunked Tatum to give Winston-Salem runners on first and second with two outs. Loidel Chapelli cashed in and knocked a clutch RBI single to left field to give the Dash a 4-3 lead.
Kelley worked through another scoreless frame in the bottom of the sixth, and neither side could muster any offense in the seventh. In the top of the eighth, though, the Dash found some crucial insurance.
With one out, Fish launched a solo shot to right field, his third homer of the year, to give Winston-Salem a 5-3 lead. Kelley continued his impressive night into the bottom of the frame, retiring the side in order.
After four scoreless innings including one hit and three strikeouts, Kelley's night was concluded, and Tristan Stivors entered in the bottom of the ninth. Stivors retired the side in order and sealed the Dash's 5-3 victory.
Kelley earned the win, his first of the season, Galue was charged with the loss and Stivors picked up his fifth save. With the win, Winston-Salem pulled the series to 3-2 and gained an opportunity for a split.
Sunday's series finale is set for 2:05 p.m. from Bowling Green Ballpark.
