Winston-Salem Dash Game Notes

July 9, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Secret Code is "Boscan," not "Bosco": A game after being flummoxed by Miguel De Los Santos, the Dash were able to figured out his countryman Wilfredo Boscan last night, scoring five times off the right-hander en route to a rain-shortened 5-0 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Boscan retired the first two men of the inning in every frame until the seventh, but Winston was able to strike with a couple of two-out rallies. In the third inning, Tyler Saladino singled and Jared Mitchell drove him in with an RBI double to break the scoreless tie. In the fifth, Saladino tripled and Mitchell brought him in again, this time with a two-run home run to center field. Boscan ran into trouble at the start of the seventh inning, when two of the first three batters reached and both men came in to score. Torrential rains entered the scene in the eighth inning, flooding the field at BB&T Ballpark and forcing an early ending to Friday's action. The win gave Winston-Salem the series victory, ending the team's two-series skid.

WICK marks the SWAT: While the Dash got some timely hits last night, the biggest reason for their win over the Pelicans was the man on the mound. Matt Wickswat issued the best performance of his professional career, throwing a career-high-tying seven innings of shutout baseball. Wickswat allowed just two hits and did not walk a batter while striking out five. Between the second and seventh innings, he retired 15 straight Pelicans batters, mostly by getting early-count swings that produced outs.

The Wicked Mitch of the West End: Jared Mitchell continued his roller coaster of a season with another strong game last night. On Thursday, Mitchell was 0 for 4 with four strikeouts, but after striking out in his first at bat last night, he reached base in each of his next three plate appearances. He hit an RBI double in the third, a two-run homer in the fifth, and walked to load the bases in the seventh. Despite the rocky game on Thursday, it was an overall strong home stand for the former first rounder. Mitchell hit .429 (12 for 28) with four doubles, two triples, two home runs, seven RBI, ten runs scored, five walks, and he was hit by a pitch. He had an OBP of .529 in the last week in all and slugged .929, good for a 1.458 OPS.

Oral Rocket: Dash shortstop Tyler Saladino was one base short of an inside-the-park home run last night, tripling off the side of the home run porch wall in right-center field. He eventually came around to score on Jared Mitchell's home run and finished the night 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored. Since June 5, Saladino is hitting .324 (33 for 102) with nine doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 15 RBI, and 20 runs scored. In that period, Saladino leads the Carolina League in slugging (.657) and is fourth in among all Advanced-A players. Since June 5 he also leads the Carolina League in home runs (7, tied with John Whittleman), OPS (1.059), and extra-base hits (18). Despite missing the first month of the season, the former Oral Roberts standout, is tied for sixth in the Carolina League in homers with 11, averaging one per every 17.27 at bats. If he had the requisite number of at bats, he would rank second only to Ian Gac in best HR/AB ratio.

Stereo Ciolli: For the second straight day, Dash right fielder Nick Ciolli made a catch that landed on SportsCenter's "Top Plays" segment. Ciolli robbed Travis Adair of a grand slam Wednesday night in the fourth inning, banging into the same fence he tumbled over to take a home run away from David Mailman against Salem on Tuesday. Ciolli's most recent catch ranked number five on today's top ten, while his catch the night before came in at number two. Both catches can be seen on the Dash's YouTube channel at youtube.com/wsdashbaseball. Continuing with the theme of brilliant catches by Dash outfielders, Justin Greene's amazing grab from a game in April 2010 against the Kinston Indians will be featured today at 5 p.m. in a segment on minor league catches during today's episode of ABC's "The Winner's Bracket."

Entering the Hector Sector: A day after making his major league debut with a scoreless ninth inning against the Royals, former Dash pitcher Hector Santiago strengthened his hold on the major league record for lowest ERA of all-time. The lefty threw 4.1 shutout innings against the Twins Thursday night after Philip Humber's start was cut short. Santiago struck out one, walked one, and allowed his first hit. The first batter he retired was former All-Star Jim Thome. Santiago pitched for Winston-Salem in all of 2009 and 2010, and started 2011 with the Dash, making eight starts before a promotion to Birmingham. He had spent more than a week on Chicago's active roster before finally appearing in his first game on Wednesday.

Today's Opposing Starter: RHP Pete Ruiz (4-3, 5.00) makes his 17th appearance and 13th start of the season for the Red Sox. He has made three starts against the Dash, going 1-0 with a 2.81 ERA in 16 innings (13 K, 4 BB). He got a no-decision in Independence Day at Winston-Salem, allowing four runs (three earned on five hits and three walks in four-plus innings. started twice this season against the Dash and earned the win in his most recent. In 11 starts in 2011, he is 3-1 with a 5.30 ERA. Ruiz was originally draftedin the 12th round of the 2008 MLB First- Year Player Draft out of Santa Barbara Community College, where he originally started as a corner infielder. He spent 2010 with the low-A Greenville Drive and went 10-8 with a 4.19 ERA in 26 appearances (20 starts). He was tied for second in the Red Sox system in wins and was third in strikeouts (109). Over his last eight starts of the season, he was 5-1 with a 1.91 ERA. He throws an 88-91 two seam fastball, a 92-94 four-seamer, a curveball, and a changeup.
