Winston-Salem Dash News Release

SALEM, VA (JULY 9, 2011) - Salem struck for some early offense and got a stellar performance by Pete Ruiz to beat Winston-Salem, 9-1 on Saturday night at LewisGale Field. The Dash stayed within three games of first-place Kinston, which also lost on Saturday.

After a scoreless first inning for both teams, the Red Sox (8-8, 40-46) got on the board in the second. Bryce Brentz led off with a double down the left field line, and later came around to score on a single by David Mailman.

Dash starter Brad Furnish struggled with his control in the third inning. Zach Gentile was hit by a pitch to start, and then stole second base. Shannon Wilkerson walked before a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third. Kolbrin Vitek drove in Gentile with a sacrifice fly to center field. After Jorge Padron walked, Brentz plated Wilkerson with a sac fly to right to put Salem up 3-0.

The Red Sox added more in the fourth when four straight hitters reached with one out. Mailman hit an infield single and moved to second when Derrik Gibson walked. Gentile followed with a single to score Mailman, and Gibson crossed home on a single by Wilkerson. Furnish faced one more batter before Leroy Hunt took over.

The Dash (8-8, 40-46) got on the board in the fifth inning when Nick Ciolli and Kyle Colligan started with two consecutive walks. Ciolli scored on Daniel Wagner's two-out single.

Hunt retired the first seven batters he faced before getting into trouble in the seventh. He walked Wilkerson, then gave up a single to Vitek. Josue Peley singled home Wilkerson, and Brentz doubled home Vitek. With runners at second and third, Dan Butler hit a sac fly to center that scored Peley and put the Red Sox up 8-1.

Chris Bassitt made his Advanced-A debut for Winston-Salem after Hunt hit the next batter, Miles Head. Bassitt, the 16th round draft pick of the White Sox in this year's First-Year Player Draft, set down two straight batters to end the seventh. Salem scored once more in the eighth when Brentz singled in Gentile, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

Pete Ruiz (5-3) got his second win of the season against Winston-Salem with six innings of work. He gave up one earned run on three hits and struck out seven. Furnish (0-2) picked up the loss after allowing five runs (all earned) in 3.2 innings.
