RED SOX RALLY PAST DASH IN OPENER
The Salem Red Sox scored four runs on just one hit in the deciding eighth inning of their 6-4 victory over the Dash in the first of four on Friday night at LewisGale Field. Euclides Leyer walked four in two-thirds of an inning, and all of these runners came around to score. Colin Kleven inherited three of them, with the Dash clinging to a 4-3 lead. However, Ben Moore delivered a go-ahead two-run single before Salem added an insurance run thanks to a Toby Thomas error. The Dash rebounded from an early 2-0 hole and scored all of their runs from the fourth to the sixth.
AWESOME ADAMS
The Dash did not take advantage of another dynamite start from righty Spencer Adams, the third-best prospect in the White Sox system per MLB Pipeline and Baseball America. Adams earned some revenge against Salem by limiting the Red Sox to just two runs (one earned) over seven innings. In his previous two starts against the first-place Sox, Adams gave up six runs. Over his last two outings overall, the former second-round pick has logged 15.0 innings and given up four runs (three earned). Adams paces the Carolina League with 52.0 innings of work.
MASHING MONTILLA
Infielder Gerson Montilla continues to swing a hot bat. Thanks to his two-run blast in the fourth, Montilla now has six home runs (T-7th in the CL) and 32 RBIs (T-3rd in the CL), both of which are team-highs. Since last Friday (May 13), Montilla has amassed 14 RBIs, second-most in the Minor Leagues during this span. Only T.J. Rivera of Las Vegas (Triple-A, New York Mets) has driven in more over the last eight days (15).
HALTED HUNTER
Hunter Jones' impressive six-game hit streak came to an end due to an 0-for-3 showing on Friday. During this surge, Jones hit .542 (13-for-24) with eight runs and seven stolen bases. He still stands third in hits (48), third in runs (32) and fourth in steals (20) in the Carolina League.
EIGHT BALL FOR BARNUM
While Jones' hit streak came to an end, Keon Barnum's advanced to eight in a row thanks to a 2-for-4 performance. In these eight contests, the Tampa, Fla., native possesses a .333 batting average (10-for-30), though he has not scored a run and has only driven home one. In fact, Barnum's sixth-inning double was his first extra-base hit since returning from the disabled list (12 games). With a knock Saturday, Barnum would match the longest hitting streak by a Winston-Salem hitter thus far this season. Nick Basto logged a nine-game run from April 21-30.
FOURTH TIME THE CHARM?
Saturday starter Brandon Brennan, a member of the White Sox 40-man roster, has struggled since returning to the Dash. In his three High-A outings, Brennan has only tossed a total of 9.2 innings. He left his first start due to injury in the fifth. An ejection halted the California native's second outing in the third frame. Six days ago against Potomac, Brennan surrendered eight runs, including six in a fourth frame during which he did not earn an out. More information on Brennan is available on page 3 of the attached document.
NINE UP, NINE DOWN
Normally, retiring nine in a row is a noteworthy accomplishment, but Chris Sale has pulled off a "nine up, nine down" in the win column. Sale became the first Major Leaguer to reach nine wins with a complete game against Houston on Thursday. During his nine starts, Sale, who pitched for the Dash in 2010, boasts a 1.58 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP. No other big league hurler has earned more than seven wins, and only two men have reached that plateau: Jake Arrieta (Cubs) and Stephen Strasburg (Nationals).
DASH DOTS
The Dash won their first three games in Salem this season, but the Red Sox have squeaked past Winston by a total of three runs in the last two meetings at LewisGale Field...Montilla has now homered 76 times in his professional career.
