ASTROS EDGE DASH IN SERIES OPENER

Despite a quality start from Dash starter Jimmy Lambert, the Buies Creek Astros eked out a 3-1 victory against Winston-Salem in series opener on Tuesday at Jim Perry Stadium. Lambert, who has now strung together three consecutive quality starts, went six innings in the effort, allowing five hits and three runs while walking two and striking out five. Winston-Salem mustered a season-low four hits on Tuesday, but the team did plate the first run of the game in the fourth against Buies Creek starter Jorge Alcala on an RBI groundout by Gavin Sheets. The Astros mustered just one hit through the first five innings, but Buies Creek took the lead for good in the sixth on an Abraham Toro RBI single, a J.J. Matijevic RBI double and a Chas McCormick sacrifice fly. Abdiel Saldana picked up the win for Buies Creek, tossing four shutout innings of relief.

A CALL TO ACTION

After getting off to a 2-for-22 start to the season, Call has established himself as one of the more consistent hitters in the Dash lineup. The former Ball State star has registered a hit in 11 of his last 12 games, posting a .356 average with four home runs and 14 RBIs during that stretch. Call, who was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year in 2016, is slashing an impressive .278/.391/.486 batting line with five homers and 19 RBIs in 29 games played this season.

TRY AND STOP MICKER

Thanks to a 1-for-4 performance on Tuesday, Dash outfielder/designated hitter Micker Adolfo has still reached base in all but one game in the month of May. After earning Carolina League Player of the Month honors for April, Adolfo is off to a great start in May. The 21-year-old slugger is posting an impressive .326/.466/.543 batting line with one homer, five doubles, one triple and seven RBIs in 13 games played. Signed at the age of 16 for $1.6 million out of the Dominican Republic, Adolfo is batting .314 overall, good for the seventh-best mark in the circuit. He's first in the CL in slugging percentage (.547) and tied for first in doubles (12).

WELL-BALANCED ATTACK

Through the first 38 games of the season, the Dash have proven to be one of the most well-rounded teams in the Carolina League. Winston sits among the league leaders in several offensive categories. Winston-Salem leads the league in doubles (89), and the team is second in the league in runs scored (205), batting average (.279), hits (360) and slugging percentage (.440). Meanwhile, Winston-Salem sports the second-best ERA in the Carolina League with a 3.42 mark.

A RACE TO THE TOP

The Dash are currently in the midst of a pivotal three-game series against first-place Buies Creek, who is two games up on Winston-Salem in the Southern Division standings. Prior to this series, the Dash took two of three against Buies Creek from May 4-6 at BB&T Ballpark. Buies Creek has the second-worst average in the circuit with a .235 mark, but the club owns a team ERA of 3.36 ERA, which is the best mark in the 10-team league.

LOOKING TO CASH IN

Winston-Salem will send left-hander Tanner Banks to the hill in its middle match against Buies Creek on Wednesday. Last time out, Banks put together his best start of the season, tossing 6.2 innings and allowing three earned runs in an effort against Salem at Haley Toyota Field. Wednesday will mark Banks' fifth career start against Buies Creek. A Carolina League All-Star with Winston-Salem in 2017, Banks went 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA against the Astros last year, but he suffered a loss against Buies Creek on May 4. Overall, Banks is 0-2 with a 5.06 ERA.
