DASH DROP GAME FIVE TO GREENSBORO
The Dash dropped their second straight game Saturday, committing three errors in the 7-2 loss. Ian Dawkins continued his torrid hitting, slugging his third homer with Winston-Salem in the loss, smacking a solo shot in the third. Travis Moniot cracked his second homer of the season, adding a double for good measure.
The Dash will turn to Davis Martin in the finale of the six-game set, hoping to win their second series of the year. Winston-Salem took five of six from Hickory earlier this year for their first series win and are one game away from earning series win number two.
A LOOK AT CARMEN MLODZINSKI
Starting for the Grasshoppers in the series finale is Carmen Mlodzinski, a right-hander from Hilton Head Island, SC and the University of South Carolina. Drafted 31st overall in 2020, Mlodzinski (pronounced, Ma-GIN-Ski) features a three-quarters delivery and a fastball that runs 92-96 mph. Originally recruited as a two-way player to South Carolina, the righty became a full-time pitcher for the Gamecocks after coaches saw his arm strength and fastball, moving him to the mound full time. Mlodzinski began his high school career at shortstop, not toeing the rubber until his junior season while only throwing 45 innings in his high school career.
After a decorated high school career, Mlodzinski went to South Carolina with decent results his first two seasons, exploding in the shortened 2020 season after a trip to the Cape Cod League. The righty pitched to a 2.84 ERA in four starts in 2020 and was named to the preseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award, given each year to the top collegiate baseball player.
South Carolina pitching coach Skylar Meade compared his delivery to that of Brandon Webb and Roy Halladay - lofty comparisons that Meade stated would take a lot of work to reach, but ones that the former Gamecock will strive to achieve.
WHO'S LEFT FROM 5/4?
With how often players get assigned to a different team within their professional organization, the Dash are no stranger to making roster moves. 17 of the original 30 players from Opening Day still remain on the Dash's active roster, with four players having been promoted to either Double-A Birmingham or Triple-A Charlotte. Winston-Salem has had some tough injury luck, with six players on the Injured List, opening up roster spots for other players to make their mark at the High-A level in their absence.
SOME DENIM, SOME DOUGHNUTS, AND SOME HOT SAUCE: A FRIENDLY WAGER
With the proximity of this upcoming series, two local government officials have made a friendly wager based on the outcome of the 24 games the Dash and Grasshoppers play this year.
Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan and Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines both are looking forward to the rivalry between the two cities, but they both have a little something extra riding on the outcome.
In an interview with WFMY, Mayor Vaughan wagered a pair of Wrangler jeans if the Dash were to upend the 'Hoppers in the season-long series. Mayor Joines countered by offering up a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts and "a nice supply of Texas Pete" if Greensboro defeats the Dash. Both officials noted their excitement over the series, and now have a little more skin in the game coming into the first six games.
A PREVIEW OF TOMORROW
The Dash spend Monday off, returning to Truist Stadium for 12 straight home games. On the docket in the first series are the Greenville Drive, the High-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Greenville features the highest team batting average in all of High-A. The Drive also rank in the top three in all of High-A in homers and OPS, with slugger Tyreque Reed leading all qualified hitters in OPS at 1.137.
After the Drive play six in Winston-Salem, the Dash face Greensboro for six more contests, this time at Truist Stadium. The series at Truist Stadium will be the first time Greensboro has played in Winston-Salem since 1968.
