DASH COLLECT 10 HITS IN 7-4 LOSS
Despite a strong performance from the offense, Winston-Salem fell 7-4 against the Carolina Mudcats on Saturday night at Five County Stadium. The Dash smashed 10 hits in the contest, but went just 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Trailing 2-1 in the third, the Mudcats plated three to take the lead for good. Joey Meneses led the way by going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Carolina would add three more in the sixth off Winston-Salem starter Spencer Adams. The right-hander allowed a career-high seven earned runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings. Brett Austin tagged a two-run shot in the eighth to make it a 7-4 ballgame, but Chase Johnson-Mullins threw 1.2 scoreless frames to lock down his seventh save.
END OF A SOLID RUN FOR THE ROTATION
Adams' rough outing ended what was an extremely impressive run for the Dash rotation. Over the previous 10 games, Winston-Salem's rotation had submitted a 1.71 ERA (15 ER in 79.0 IP), with no hurler giving up more than three runs in a start. Before this surge, the rotation's ERA stood at 4.60. In the midst of that stretch, Winston-Salem had posted a quality start in nine games after doing so only 16 times in the season's first 51 affairs.
BASTO IS BACK
Nick Basto continued his hot hitting at the High-A level on Saturday, going 3-for-5 with an RBI double. This comes after the 22-year old stroked a solo home run on Friday, his first game back with Winston-Salem since May 8. With the Dash, Basto is hitting .354 with six homers and 20 RBIs. The Florida native began the year with Winston-Salem and got off to a scorching start. He was named the CL Player of the Month for April, after leading the Minors with 39 hits and posting a .433 batting average. A fifth-round pick in 2012, Basto was called up to Double-A on May 9. With the Barons, he posted a batting line of .188/.253/.238 with zero homers and eight RBIs in 22 games.
MONEY IN THE BANKS
Southpaw Tanner Banks makes his High-A debut on Sunday for Winston-Salem. The University of Utah product, who was called up to the Dash on Wednesday, went 6-3 with a 2.87 ERA in 11 starts with Low-A Kannapolis this season. More information is available on page 3.
THIRD YEAR OF FIRST-HALF STRUGGLES
Saturday's loss dropped the Dash to 15-16 on the road this season. With four games left away from BB&T Ballpark, Winston-Salem will try to avoid having a losing record at home (10-21) and on the road in the first half for the third straight season. Last season, the Dash were 17-18 in the Triad and 13-22 elsewhere. Prior to the All-Star Break in 2014, Winston-Salem went 16-18 at BB&T Ballpark and 14-21 on the road.
TWO TOP-10 TALENTS
Dash outfielders Hunter Jones and Mason Robbins rank in the top 10 in batting average within the Carolina League. Robbins entered Thursday with the league's top average, but he has fallen to fifth among qualifiers (.296) after going a combined 0-for-11 in the last three games. Prior to the current road trip, Robbins logged six straight multi-hit games. Jones, meanwhile, is ninth in the circuit with a .292 mark. The former Cleveland farmhand is also second in the league with 71 hits, while he stands fourth in runs (45) and stolen bases (26).
DASH DOTS
Dash C/INF Chris O'Dowd went 1-for-5 on Saturday, upping his High-A hitting streak to seven games. The 25-year old also started at third base for the second straight night. Prior to this road trip, O'Dowd had not played the position in his pro career...Manny Martinez threw 1.1 scoreless frames on Saturday. The right-hander now has a 1.23 ERA on the road, but a 13.85 mark at BB&T Ballpark...The Dash have not won a road series since April 29-May 1, when they took two out of three against Frederick at NYMEO Field.
