ZEBULON, N.C. - Winston-Salem rallied with four runs in the ninth, but a walk-off single by Joey Meneses propelled Carolina to a 9-8 win on Sunday at Five County Stadium.
The Mudcats first baseman finished the contest a home run short of the cycle, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs. In the four-game series against the Dash, Meneses went 11-for-22 with four extra-base hits and six RBIs.
Down 8-4 in the last frame, Winston-Salem (25-38) mounted a comeback against reliever Sean McLaughlin. After back-to-back one-out errors by second baseman Erison Mendez and a Marcus Davis walk, Toby Thomas grounded an RBI single to make it 8-5. The Mudcats right-hander departed after Brett Austin reached on an RBI fielder's choice to make it 8-6.
With a one-out, bases loaded situation and Evan Phillips (2-1) on the mound, Michael Suiter stroked a two-run single to right to tie the game at eight. McLaughlin would be tagged with four unearned runs in just 1.1 frames.
Unfortunately for the Dash, the Mudcats (26-34) secured their third consecutive victory and a series win over Winston in the next half-inning. With a runner on second and two outs, Meneses delivered the game-ending blow to right off Dash reliever Connor Walsh (1-1).
With the loss, Winston-Salem drops to 15-17 on the road and 3-4 against the Mudcats this season.
Dash starter Tanner Banks made his High-A debut on Sunday and ran into some trouble after a quick 1-2-3 first inning.
Meneses led off the second with a triple and Jordan Edgerton brought him in on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. Later in the frame, with a runner on second and two outs, Tanner Murphy roped an RBI double to put Carolina up two.
The Mudcats added three more runs in the third to cap the scoring off the Dash left-hander. Banks would settle down and finish his outing tossing six innings, allowing nine hits and five earned runs.
After leaving six runners on through the first four innings, the Dash broke through offensively off Carolina starter Matt Withrow in the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, Davis lashed a two-run double to make it a 5-2 contest.
Thomas followed with a two-run triple to chase Withrow from the game and cut the lead to one. The Dash second baseman went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Dash reliever Colin Kleven relieved Banks in the seventh and allowed three runs, including a two-run homer by Jordan Edgerton to make it 8-4.
The Dash now travel to Wilmington for a three-game set against the Blue Rocks, beginning on Monday night at 6:35 p.m. Winston-Salem sends Matt Cooper (4-4, 3.22 ERA) to the bump against Wilmington right-hander Josh Staumont (1-6, 5.21 ERA). The Pregame Dash begins at 6:20 p.m., and fans can tune in on wsdash.com/broadcast or the TuneIn Radio App.
Winston-Salem returns to BB&T Ballpark on Thursday, June 16, for a four-game set against the Salem Red Sox to conclude the season's first half. Thursday's series opener is another Throwback Thursday, presented by Parr Investments, that will feature commemorative Warthogs jerseys.
