WINSTON-SALEM DASH (10-9, 40-48) vs. MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS (11-8, 55-32)
RHP J.B. Wendelken (5-7, 4.44 ERA) vs. LHP Luis Parra (7-4, 4.13 ERA)
7 p.m. - BB&T Ballpark (Winston-Salem, N.C.) Game #89 (Home Game #45)
DANISH, RONDON SHINE IN WINSTON WIN The Dash cruised past the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 6-2 on Monday night at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem starter Tyler Danish blanked the Birds over six innings and 71 pitches. His seven whiffs were one shy of his career high, while he did not walk a batter. Offensively, Cleuluis Rondon set the tone with an RBI triple in the Dash's three-run second and a two-run blast in the fourth. As a result, Winston-Salem pulled into a share of second place, and the Dash are a game back of the first-place Pelicans in the Southern Division.
A GREAT DIVIDE The bottom of the Dash's order stepped up in Monday's victory. The quartet of Grant Buckner (2-for-4, R), Michael Marjama (3-for-4, RBI, 2R), Zach Voight (1-for-4, RBI, R) and Cleuluis Rondon (2-for-4, HR, 3RBI, 2R) combined to produce eight of the Dash's nine hits, five of their six RBIs and all six runs. On the flip side, the top five hitters were a combined 1-for-14, though this group did draw seven walks.
RONDON'S BREAKOUT Shortstop Cleuluis Rondon emphatically ended a slump to begin his High-A career. In his first five games with the Dash, Rondon was 1-for-17 after hitting .233 with Low-A Kannapolis. This included his first home run in 83 games this season. He had not gone yard since August 3, 2013, his third game with the White Sox system. Rondon has now gathered five home runs in his 260 professional games.
DOMINANT DANISH Tyler Danish recorded one of his best Minor League starts on Monday night. Five days after laboring through 4.1 innings at Myrtle Beach, Danish needed just an average of 11.8 pitches per inning. He worked through a career high-tying six innings for the second time in his eight High-A outings. Danish paced a 13-strikeout effort for the Dash, a mark that matches a season best. Winston-Salem improved to 26-10 when receiving a quality start.
BRING ON THE BIRDS Beginning with Monday's series opener, the Dash will have played seven games against first-place Myrtle Beach through next Friday, and all of them will take place at BB&T Ballpark. The Pelicans boast the best overall record in the Carolina League (55-32), and they have claimed seven of the first 10 games between Winston and Myrtle. The Birds have outscored the Dash 45-26, while Monday's six-run output represents the best offensive effort for Winston-Salem in the 2014 season series.
THERE'S THE GLOVE The Dash have played three consecutive games without committing an error. Winston-Salem's last defensive miscue came in the fourth inning on Friday against Wilmington, which works out to an errorless streak of 30 innings. Despite this surge, Winston still leads the Carolina League in errors with 129, while its 108 unearned runs are the most in all of Minor League Baseball.
WINCING-SALEM Winston-Salem has endured some critical injuries over the last week. On Wednesday, shortstop Tim Anderson (right wrist) and right-hander Frank Montas (right knee) were placed on the disabled list. That night, Courtney Hawkins suffered a concussion and joined Anderson and Montas on the disabled list Thursday. Thus, the Dash lost two first-round picks and a pitcher who was supposed to suit up for the World Team in Sunday's SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game.
DASH DOTS Winston-Salem improved to 17-7 when scoring six or more runs...This includes an 11-1 mark in such games at BB&T Ballpark...The Dash are tied with Frederick for second in the league with 56 home runs...Only Myrtle Beach (75) has more long balls than the Dash...Jacob May drew three walks on Monday, which matches the most by a Dash hitter in a single game thus far this year...The seven-, eight- and nine-hole hitters for the Dash had a triple in the win Monday.
