Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg, VA - With the Hillcats and Mudcats tied 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, a nearby transformer was struck by lightning to knock out power to Lynchburg City Stadium and the surrounding area. As a result, the game was suspended until 6:05pm Wednesday night.
Lynchburg (43-45) and Carolina (39-47) will resume action with two outs and the bases empty for Kevin Ahrens in the bottom of the sixth. Once the resumed contest is completed, the two teams will play a nine-inning game afterward.
Prior to the power going out at Calvin Falwell Field, LeVon Washington hit a solo home run to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning. Daniel Watts went the first 5.1 innings for the Hillcats, allowing three runs on seven hits. The lefty struck out three and walked three before turning the ball over to Zach Jadofsky, who retired both batters he faced.
The Hillcats scored all three of their runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead at the time. Kevin Ahrens, Emerson Landoni, Will Skinner and Levi Hyams hit consecutive singles, which marked the only four baserunners that Carolina starter Ryan Merritt allowed. Ahrens, Landoni and Skinner all came home, while Skinner and Hyams tallied RBIs on their base hits. Joe Odom accounted for the final RBI on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Outside of that four batter stretch, Merritt retired all 17 batters he faced and needed less than 60 pitches to work through 5.2 innings.
Carolina scored the first run of the game after a leadoff double by Todd Hankins and an RBI groundout by Joe Sever two batters later. The Mudcats' second run came in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Erik Gonzalez, which drove in Yhoxian Medina.
