Salem Red Sox Game Notes

July 8, 2014 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

The Salem Sox and Frederick Keys play game two of a four game set at 7:05 at LewisGale Field.

Offensive Slugfest: The Sox came back from a six run deficit last night to get within one run going to the ninth inning, before falling 9- 8 to Frederick. The Sox have now posted back to back eight run games, including an 8-2 win in the series finale at Carolina Sunday afternoon. The Sox have combined to hit .370 with runners in scoring position the last two nights (10/27). The Sox have averaged more than five runs a game in July, hitting at a .276 clip as a club. That mark puts the Salem Sox second in the Carolina League in the month, behind Frederick. The Keys have amassed an impressive .303 average in the month of July.

Miller Time: Mike Miller has been everything the Sox could've hoped for since being called up on the first of June. Miller has sustained his good play with the Salem Sox over 30 games now with the club, hitting .330 with 20 runs scored and 12 RBIs. Miller has been espe- cially hot of late, with hits in seven straight games. Miller holds

a .520 average over his last seven games (13/25). Mike did snap a streak last night, he had scored a run in seven straight before not scoring yesterday. Miller has reached base in 14 of the 16 games he's played in the second half.

Tavarez on a Tear: Aneury Tavarez went 1-5 in the series opener last night. Tavarez now holds an eight game hit streak, and has hits in nine of ten, holding a .400 average in his last ten (14/35). Tavarez has been hot for nearly five weeks now. Aneury's average hit a mid- season low .186 on June 1st. Since that point, he's hitting .325 (37/114), raising his season average to .248. However, the free swinger has increased some numbers in the minus category lately as well. Tavarez's three strikeouts last night gives the right fielder 68 strikeouts in 67 games this season. That compares to just 11 walks.

The RBI Man: Reed Gragnani brought home four runs in last night's 9- 8 defeat. Gragnani has been as good as anyone on the circuit with runners in scoring position. Gragnani holds a .436 average (34/78) with runners on second or third this year. Reed hit with the bases loaded three straight at-bats last night, where he is even better. Gragnani holds a .571 average (8/14) with the bases full this season, with 16 RBIs. Reed is still looking for his first home run of the year, but he's made up for it with a team leading 40 RBIs with runners in scoring position this year.

Cody's Turnaround: Cody Kukuk was outstanding his last time out in Frederick, throwing his best start of the year. Kukuk allowed just two hits and an unearned run in five innings of work, with three walks and six strikeouts. This start came on the heels of his June, where Kukuk was 0-3 with a 19.55 ERA in four starts, walking 19 batters in just nine and two thirds innings pitched.

Other Notable Nuggets: Jantzen Witte has hit in five straight games and eight of nine overall.

The Salem Sox are now just 17-35 when their starter goes less than six innings, while 25-9 when the starter goes six or more.
