Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 8, 2014) - Winston-Salem overcame a six-run deficit, its first such rally since August 12, 2012, to top the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 13-9 at BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday night.
The Dash (11-9, 41-48) trailed 9-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning against Myrtle Beach reliever Cody Buckel (2-5). Jason Coats led off the frame with a double and moved to third on Keon Barnum's base hit. Nick Basto's sacrifice fly to right cut the deficit to 9-4. Grant Buckner was hit by a pitch and Michael Marjama singled to load the bases.
Cleuluis Rondon kept the rally going with a bloop single to center field, scoring Barnum. Jacob May walked to force Buckner home, making it a 9-6 game. Keenyn Walker singled to left, chasing Marjama to the plate and cutting the margin to 9-7.
Cody Ege was summoned from the Pelicans' bullpen, inducing a run-scoring groundout from Joey DeMichele to make it 9-8. With runners at second and third, Coats connected on his second double of the inning, plating May and Walker to give Winston-Salem a 10-9 lead. Barnum followed with a double to score Coats, completing the eight-run frame and providing the Dash with an 11-9 advantage.
The Dash sent 12 men to the plate in the sixth inning and registered seven hits in the inning that sparked their biggest comeback since the aforementioned stunner over Salem two years ago at BB&T Ballpark.
Myrtle Beach (11-9, 55-33) struck immediately against Winston-Salem starter J.B. Wendelken in the first inning. Chris Garia led off the game with a single and scored on Nick Williams' homer to right field, his ninth of the year to make it a 2-0 game.
The Dash answered with three runs in the bottom of the first against Pelicans' starter Luis Parra. May and Walker started the rally with back-to-back singles. DeMichele tripled over the center fielder Garia's head, scoring two. Coats followed with a single to drive in DeMichele, pushing Winston-Salem to a 3-2 edge.
Myrtle Beach roared back in the second. Royce Bolinger and David Lyon each singled before Edwin Garcia's sacrifice bunt placed runners at second and third. Luis Mendez doubled to left field, bringing Bolinger and Lyon home for a 4-3 Pelicans' lead.
The visitors from the Grand Strand flexed their muscles again in the third. Williams blasted his second homer of the game, clearing the 20-foot high wall in right center field, making it a 5-3 contest.
The Pelicans provided some extra cushion in the top of the fourth. Garcia singled, Garia walked and Christopher Bostick singled to load the bases. Williams' base hit brought home two runs for a 7-3 advantage. A fielder's choice by Jorge Alfaro against Dash reliever Sean Hagan (1-0) plated Bostick, then a wild throw by Rondon allowed Williams to hustle home, giving Myrtle Beach the 9-3 lead.
With an 11-9 edge, the Dash added some insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. Buckner and Marjama singled before Rondon's double scored Buckner to make it 12-9. Later in the inning, Marjama raced home on an Ege wild pitch, giving the Dash their largest lead of the game at 13-9.
Reliever Brad Goldberg preserved the win, tossing three scoreless innings for his second save of the season.
Winston-Salem produced its most hits in a single game this season with 18, and every member of the Dash starting lineup recorded at least one hit. Eight men tallied one or more runs, while seven drove home at least one.
Winston-Salem is now tied for first place in the Southern Division's second-half standings and will seek its fourth win in a row on Wednesday night against Myrtle Beach. The Dash will send right-hander Tony Bucciferro (6-7, 3.81 ERA) to the mound, while the Pelicans counter with southpaw Chad Bell (3-0, 3.26 ERA).
First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. For tickets, visit wsdash.com or call (336) 714-2287. If you can't make it to BB&T Ballpark, you can follow all the action live on wsdash.com/broadcast, beginning with the Pregame Dash at 6:45.
