Carolina Mudcats News Release
Lynchburg, Va. - Heavy thunderstorms turned out the lights on the Carolina Mudcats and Lynchburg Hillcats on Tuesday night at Calvin Falwell Field. The Mudcats had just tied the game 3-3 in the top of the sixth on LeVon Washington's third home run of the season when lightning struck a transformer, killing the lights with two out in the last inning.
The two clubs will resume the game at 6:05 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9. The Hillcats' Kevin Ahrens will hit with a 1-1 count and the bases empty. The originally scheduled game for tomorrow will follow in it's entirety after the completion of the suspended game.
Ryan Merritt pitched 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. All the damage by Lynchburg came in the second frame. Four straight batters reached on singles. Will Skinner, Levi Hyams and Joe Odom brought in the runs. Merritt settled in to retire 14 straight before the power failure.
Todd Hankins made an immediate impact in his return from an oblique injury. The center fielder doubled to leadoff the game and scored on a groundout by Joe Sever for a 1-0 lead. Hankins came out, as scheduled, after five innings. He finished 2-for-2 with a double, walk and a run scored.
After trailing 3-1, the Mudcats fought back on a sac-fly by Erik Gonzalez to score Yhoxian Medina in the fifth and Washinton launched a towering fly to right-center off Hillcats' starter Daniel Watts to even the score.
Watts finished after 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Carolina returns home to host the Winston-Salem Dash with the first of four games on Friday, July 11. Tickets and other information are available by calling the box office at (919) 269-2287 or by logging on to carolinamudcats.com.
