Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM DASH (13-10) at LYNCHBURG HILLCATS (11-10)
RHP Chris Beck (2-2, 0.73 ERA) vs. RHP A.J. Holland (1-1, 4.12 ERA)
6:05 p.m. - Lynchburg City Stadium (Lynchburg, VA)
BASSITT, CURLEY LIFT DASH TO SWEEP Winston-Salem finished up its second sweep of the campaign with a 4-1 victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium. Dash starter Chris Bassitt tossed seven scoreless innings for his third straight victorious start. Chris Curley was the offensive star, matching a career-high with four hits and hitting his fourth homer of the season. Six of the Dash's 13 wins this season have come against the Blue Rocks, while Winston-Salem is 21-6 against Wilmington since 2012.
NO-HIT WONDERS Dash starters took a no-hitter into the sixth inning both Saturday and Sunday in Delaware. Both Bryan Blough and Chris Bassitt held the Blue Crew hitless through five frames, and Wilmington's sixth-inning leadoff hitter broke up the no-no bids both times. Blough and Bassitt, who both posted two-hit outings through seven frames, carried a no-hitter longer than any Dash hurler since Justin Collop went five and two-thirds innings July 13, 2012, at Myrtle Beach.
CURLEY'S FURY Chris Curley turned in the Dash's second four-hit effort of the year Sunday. The Kentucky native went 4-for-4 and fell a triple short of the cycle. His RBI double in the first kicked off Winston-Salem's scoring, while his solo shot to dead center in the eighth proved to be the game-winning run. Before Sunday, Curley was just 4-for-29 (.138) in his previous seven games.
INVADING THE NORTH Winston-Salem has won all six road games against Northern Division squads this season. The Dash swept Frederick from April 9-11 at Harry Grove Stadium before taking all three from Wilmington this past weekend. This is the Dash's longest road win streak in interdivisional matchups since the club won seven straight early in 2012 (April 11-May 1). However, the Dash struggled in Lynchburg last season, going 4-8 between the regular season and the playoffs.
BECK AND CALL Winston-Salem starter Chris Beck leads the Carolina League with a 0.73 earned run average, which is also good for eighth among minor league qualifiers. Before his last outing against Lynchburg Wednesday (6.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER), Beck was second in the minors in innings pitched among hurlers who had not allowed an earned run in 2013. Myrtle Beach's Luke Jackson (1.27) is second in the CL and 25th in the minor leagues, while Kannapolis' Myles Jaye (0.90) is second in the White Sox minor league system and 13th in the minors.
BEST IN THE MINORS Winston-Salem is the only team in Minor League Baseball that has not lost a game when scoring the game's first run. The Dash are 10-0 when they plate the first tally of a game. Winston has also played the most one- or two-run games in the Carolina League this season. The Dash are 7-6 when a game is decided by two runs or less.
FIRST-CLASS THIEVERY New Dash outfielder Adam Heisler has stolen 13 bases between Low-A Kannapolis (9) and Winston-Salem (4). He is tied for fifth in the minor leagues in total stolen bases. Fellow White Sox farmhand Micah Johnson leads the minors with 20, all with the Intimidators. In his first four games with the Dash, Heisler owns an average of .286 (4-for-14) with four runs scored and two RBIs. The Mobile, Ala., native has stolen at least one base in three straight games.
A PEAK AND A VALLEY Through 23 games, the Dash are atop the Carolina League in earned run average (3.11). Winston-Salem has a better ERA than the one team it is chasing in the circuit's overall standings (Myrtle Beach, 3.45). Winston trails only Dunedin (2.69) and San Jose (2.96) among the 30 High-A squads. However, the Dash's batting average (.219) is at the bottom of the CL. Despite a league-leading 19 home runs, the Dash are also seventh in runs per game (4.1).
