LYNCHBURG, VA (APRIL 29, 2013) - The Lynchburg Hillcats pulled away late to end the Dash's three-game winning streak with a 6-3 victory in the first of a four-game set Monday night at Calvin Falwell Field.
Winston-Salem (13-11) entered play with a perfect 10-0 record when scoring the game's first run, and the Dash did assume a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Among the 120 full-season minor league teams, Winston was the last team to suffer such a defeat. The Dash also dropped their first road game against the Northern Division after starting 6-0 thanks to sweeps at Frederick and Wilmington.
The Dash claimed that early advantage thanks to Courtney Hawkins' solo blast to left. Hawkins is tied for second in the Carolina League with seven homers thus far in 2013.
The Hillcats (12-10) responded in the third when Elmer Reyes scored on a wild pitch from Dash starter Chris Beck (2-3), who entered play with a 0.73 earned run average. This mark led the Carolina League and was eighth among qualifiers in Minor League Baseball.
Both teams did not dent the scoreboard again until the home half of the seventh. Kyle Kubitza and David Rohm strung together consecutive doubles to give Lynchburg a 2-1 lead. Moments later, Rohm scored on a wild pitch to cap the two-run frame.
Beck posted his fourth quality start in five appearances this season, but he suffered his second straight loss to Lynchburg. Beck worked six and a third innings and allowed three runs on four hits. The Jefferson, Ga., native still boasts a 1.45 ERA in 31 innings thus far this season.
Lynchburg plated three more against Jarrett Casey in the eighth. William Beckwith clubbed an RBI double, and Robby Hefflinger immediately followed with his league-leading eighth home run of the season to cap the Hillcats' scoring.
Mark Tracy's two-run long ball in the top of the ninth pulled the Dash within three, but Winston-Salem never brought the tying run to the plate in the frame.
Winston-Salem and Lynchburg continue this four-game series Tuesday night at 6:05. Terance Marin (2-0, 4.22 ERA) toes the rubber for the Dash against fellow right-hander Jarrett Miller (1-0, 1.20 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 5:50 on wsdash.com.
The Dash return home Friday for a six-game homestand against the Salem Red Sox and the Frederick Keys. Tickets are going quickly, so call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com to secure your seats.
