Winston-Salem Charges Late, but Myrtle Beach Hangs on

September 6, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Winston-Salem Dash seized an early lead in the third game of their four-game set with the Pelicans. Myrtle Beach erased it quickly and didn't look back.

Powered by a six-run third inning at BB&T Coastal Field, the Pelicans secured at least a split in their final series of the 2009 season with a 9-7 win over the Dash in front of 3,764.

Winston-Salem needled Pelicans starter Erik Cordier early, cashing in a leadoff Dale Mollenhauer walk and a Greg Paiml double for a 2-0 lead on a two-run Salvador Sanchez single. The first four men reached in the inning, but Cordier retired the next three in order to erase the early threat.

In the bottom of the inning, the Pelicans responded quickly. A leadoff Cole Miles triple turned into a run on Michael Fisher's double, and one out later, Gerry Rodriguez traded places with Fisher with a double of his own. Jesus Sucre grounded out after Rodriguez stole third, plating the Pelicans first baseman to give Myrtle Beach its first lead, 3-2 in the bottom of the opening frame.

The third inning betrayed Dash starter Jacob Rasner. Myrtle Beach sent 12 men to the plate in the frame, recording seven hits and RBIs from five different players. Rodriguez launched his 12th homer of the season with one out, a two-run shot that put the Pelicans up 6-2 at the time. Sucre and Adam Milligan doubled to follow the longball, the former scoring on the latter's, and Chris Shehan brought home Milligan with a single. Donell Linares and Cole Miles also drove home and scored runs in the inning with the third closing at a 9-2 Pelicans lead. Rasner (4-7) was charged with all nine runs on eight hits over two and a third innings in the loss.

Winston-Salem regrouped for a run in the fifth on a majestic Logan Johnson home run off, three more in the sixth keyed by a two-run Tyler Kuhn double and one more in the seventh to cut the Myrtle Beach lead to 9-7 before the Pelicans bullpen closed the door. Cordier (7-8) ends his season with a win, allowing three runs on five hits over five innings. Four Pelicans relievers allowed four Dash runs over four innings. Patrick Currin (1) worked the ninth to pick up his first save.

Monday night marks the end of the Pelicans' 2009 season. Myrtle Beach will send right-hander Brandon Beachy (4-3, 3.40) to the mound to close out the year against Winston-Salem's Miguel Socolovich (3-4, 4.83) with postgame fireworks scheduled to follow. First pitch for Monday night's series and season finale is slated for 7:05. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, by calling (843)918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
