September 6, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Myrtle Beach, SC - Myrtle Beach jumped out to a big lead early and fought off a late charge to defeat Winston-Salem 9-7 on Sunday night at BB&T Coastal Field. The Pelicans used a six-run third inning to take a 9-2 advantage before the Dash rallied within two runs before falling short. Winston-Salem remains tied for first place in the Southern Division with Salem, who lost 1-0 to Lynchburg. Kinston, who defeated Potomac 9-3, is one game back with the regular season concluding on Monday.

The Dash jumped out to a quick lead with a pair of runs of Erik Cordier in the first inning. Dale Mollenhauer led off with a walk and Greg Paiml, who finished with a season-high four hits, followed with a double that put runners on second and third. Next, Salvador Sanchez delivered a two-run single to put Winston-Salem in front 2-0.

Myrtle Beach answered in the bottom of the frame as Cole Miles led off with a triple against Jacob Rasner and scored on a double by Michael Fisher. Gerry Rodriguez smacked an RBI double that knotted the score at two. Rodriguez stole third and scored on a ground out by Jesus Sucre to give the Pelicans a 3-2 edge.

Myrtle Beach broke the game open in the third inning when they scored six runs on seven hits and sent 12 batters to the plate. Miles, Donell Linares and Chris Shehan contributed RBI singles, Adam Milligan drove in a run with a double and Rodriguez launched a two-run home run to help the Pelicans take control at 9-2.

Rasner (4-7) failed to make it out of the third and allowed nine runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings to suffer the loss. It was his shortest outing and most runs allowed this season. The Dash bullpen was solid the rest of the way as Wander Perez and Levi Maxwell combined to toss 5.2 scoreless innings.

The Dash comeback began in the top of the fifth inning when Logan Johnson led off with a solo home run. In the sixth, Johnson struck again with an RBI single and Tyler Kuhn connected on a run-scoring double to trim the Pelicans advantage to 9-6. Winston-Salem would get within two in the seventh inning when Rudy Darrow uncorked a wild pitch with the bases-loaded that scored C.J. Lang.

That would be a close as the Dash would get as Darrow tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and Patrick Currin retired the side in order to collect his first save of the season. Cordier (7-8) battled through five innings and allowed three runs on five hits. Even though he walked six batters and hit two more, he still collected the win.

The Dash and Pelicans conclude this four-game series and the regular season on Monday night at BB&T Coastal Field. Winston-Salem will start RHP Dylan Axelrod (2-1, 1.91), while Myrtle Beach will turn to RHP Brandon Beachy (4-3, 3.40). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The first-half Southern Division champion Winston-Salem Dash will host games one and two of the first round of the playoffs at Wake Forest Baseball Park on Wednesday, September 9 and Thursday, September 10. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Advanced tickets are only $5 and can be purchased by calling 336-714-2287 or visiting www.wsdash.com.
