
Early Rally Overwhelms Frederick

As Wilmington's Nick Van Stratten sent a two-run home run into the Keys bullpen giving the Blue Rocks a 6-0 lead, it already had the feeling of a long day for Frederick. The Keys couldn't turn it around as they mustered just five hits in an 8-1 defeat on Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium.
The loss clinched a sixth consecutive losing half for Frederick who dropped to 33-36 with one game remaining in the 2009 season. Frederick last finished at .500 or better in the second half of the 2006 season.
The Blue Rocks rallied for four runs on five hits in the second inning, sending ten men to the plate against Keys starter Chorye Spoone.
Trailing 6-0 into the middle innings the Keys got strong work in relief from Jake Stevens, who worked three scoreless innings, and Brett Bordes, who pitched a shutout sixth inning. But the offense could never get in gear.
Wilmington starter Michael Montgomery, who turned 20 just two months ago, was oone step ahead of Frederick throughout the afternoon. He went six innings, allowing a run on four hits while striking out six.
Blue Rocks starters have combined to work 20 innings while allowing three runs on just ten hits while striking out 17 batters in the series so far.
The Keys got multi-hit days from Robbie Widlansky and Billy Rowell. Widlansky appears poised to be the Keys fir Batting Champion since Rick Short led the league in hitting in 1997.
The 2009 season comes to a close on Labor Day with Frederick sending Sean Gleason to the hill for the season finale. First pitch is a 1:05 p.m. with coverage beginning 20 minutes earlier on frederickkeys.com.
