Two-Out Rally Takes Down P-Nats
September 6, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va- What began as a pitcher's duel in Potomac ended with the P-Nats on the wrong end of a 9-3 ballgame on the final Sunday contest of the 2009 regular season at Pfitzner Stadium.
The first four innings of this ballgame were dominated by starting pitchers Brad Peacock and Paolo Espino who set both lineups down with surgical precision. Both pitchers were on the top of their respective games until the P-Nats were able to finally break through against Espino in the fifth inning.
Devin Ivany singled, beginning another multi-hit night for the slugger, and Brian Peacock doubled to put runners on second and third with just one out in the inning before Stephen King lifted a fly ball that dropped in front of the left fielder to plate the first Potomac run.
Boomer Whiting, batting left-handed for the first time all season, followed with a line drive single up the middle to push the Potomac lead to 2-0. The P-Nats loaded the bases with two down, but Espino (9-6) struck out Jesus Valdez swinging to end the threat.
The K-Tribe would respond immediately, plating six runs of their own in the top half of the sixth inning on the strength of six consecutive two-out hits to knock Peacock (3-3) from the ballgame.
On the day, Peacock went 5 2/3 innings, surrendering six runs on nine hits while striking out four though with two outs in the sixth frame, there was still a zero in the runs column for the K-Tribe.
The P-Nats cut the lead to 6-3 after Jesus Valdez blasted his ninth home run of the season off Chen-Cheng Lee in the eighth inning, but the Tribe bounced back once again, plating three more in the ninth to finish off the ballgame at 9-3.
With the win, Kinston stays alive in the race for the final playoff spot in the Southern Division.
Every P-Nats fan should mark their calendars for Labor Day, Monday, September 7 as the P-Nats will play the final regular season home game of the 2009 season with a special afternoon start time of 1:05 ET. It will be Dollar Monday at the ballpark presented by the Washington Post where all fans can purchase both grandstand tickets and hot dogs for just a dollar apiece!
