Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes won the opening game of a three-game series tonight, downing the Joliet JackHammers 5-3 before 5,422 at Canwest Park.
Joliet opened the scoring off Bill Pulsipher in the first. Adam Klein doubled inside the left field line to lead it off, went to third on a Rob Dahlberg bunt single and scored when Kevin Rios banged into a double play. Held to just one hit through three, Winnipeg responded in the fourth off Luke O'Loughlin.
Adam Frost singled, Juan Diaz walked and Kevin West singled to load the bases with none out for Vince Harrison, who hammered the first pitch he saw deep to left for his third home in two days and fourth since he joined the Goldeyes last Tuesday. It became 5-1 in the sixth when Juan Diaz took Derek Barrows deep to start the inning for his league-leading 28th home run.
Blanked since the first, the JackHammers narrowed the gap in the ninth and chased Pulsipher in the process. Rios drew a lead-off walk and scored on a Freddie Thon double. Pulsipher came out, Chris Homer came in and promptly fanned Tim Alberts. Wally Backman Jr. doubled to score Thon to make it 5-3 but it would get no closer. Homer struck Mike Garcia out before Christian Lopez grounded out to end it.
Pulsipher (4-1) picked up the win, allowing three runs on seven hits in eight innings, fanning eight while walking just one. O'Loughlin (1-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in five innings with a walk and three strikeouts. Chris Homer tossed a shutout ninth for his seventh save.
