RailCats Congratulate Guerrero on 1,000th Career Hit

August 24, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - On Tuesday, August 18, second-year RailCat Cristian Guerrero surpassed a milestone that few even get the opportunity to reach. That evening, Guerrero collected his 1,000th professional baseball hit and, as Guerrero likes to do, did it with a flourish, belting a home run over the fence in the deepest part of the opposition's ballpark, giving the RailCats a lead they would not relinquish to the Joliet JackHammers.

Guerrero, in just short of two seasons with the RailCats, has proven himself to be one of the more dangerous hitters in the Northern League. He currently leads the team with 11 homeruns and a .441 slugging percentage in just 51 games after missing the first 30 contests of 2009 with a hamstring injury. Guerrero broke the RailCats single-season home run record in 2008, slamming 16 long balls to best former RailCat Jermaine Swinton's 15 in 2002. In 136 RailCat games Guerrero has 27 homers, third-most in franchise history.

A 12-year baseball veteran, Guerrero has hit 125 home runs and driven in 558 RBIs in a career spanning 1,064 games, all the while sporting a .270 lifetime batting average. Guerrero made his professional debut at age 17 in 1998, playing in the affiliated minor leagues through 2007 as part of the Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Angels, and Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals organizations.

A native of Bani in the Dominican Republic, Guerrero has strong family ties in baseball as the younger cousin to Los Angeles Angels' superstar Vladimir Guerrero and former seven-year MLB veteran Wilton Guerrero. Guerrero is the second RailCat to reach the 1,000 career hit plateau this year. Fellow veteran Jay Pecci eclipsed the mark on June 15 against the Kansas City T-Bones.

Guerrero and the first-place RailCats have a one-game lead on the rest of the Northern League with just seven games remaining in the 2009 regular season, all of them at home. Tickets are available for all seven games as well as the first home playoff game and can be purchased by dialing 219.822.2255 or by logging on to www.railcatsbaseball.com.
