Northern League Player and Pitcher of the Week

August 24, 2009 - Northern League (NL) News Release

Outfielder Victor Ferrante of the Schaumburg Flyers was named Northern League Player of the Week, and Kansas City T-Bones pitcher Brett Davis received the Northern League Pitcher of the Week honors for the period ending August 23rd, 2009. Ferrante, who led the league in total bases (23) and slugging percentage (.920) for the week, batted .440 (11-for-25) with seven runs scored, four doubles, a triple, two home runs and a league-high nine RBI. He collected a base hit in six of seven games, which was highlighted by a three-for-three performance in game two of a doubleheader on August 18th versus Kansas City. The 6-3, 215-pounder, is playing only his fourth season of professional baseball. He currently ranks fifth in the Northern League in home runs (17) and is tied for the league lead in triples (8), both career highs for the 24-year-old right-hander.

On the season, he leads the Flyers in nearly every offensive category: runs (48), hits (94), doubles (19), triples (8), home runs (17), and RBI (64). He also leads the Northern League with 10 outfield assists. Ferrante was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 15th round of the 2006 MLB Amateur Draft out of Solano Community College (Fairfield, CA). He played three seasons in the A's farm system where he batted a combined .256 with 33 home runs in 290 games played. Ferrante signed with the Flyers on April 9, 2009 and has played in 88 of 89 games for Schaumburg.

Davis, who signed with the T-Bones earlier in the week, earned a complete game victory in his professional debut on August 18th versus Schaumburg pitching seven innings yielding only one run in game one of a doubleheader. He followed up that performance with eight innings of two-run ball on August 22nd versus Joliet. Overall on the week, he went 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA striking out 15 while walking only one on his way to being named Northern League Pitcher of the Week. In his pro debut, the 23-year-old left-hander allowed just one runner to reach third base through the first six innings, retiring six-in-a-row at one point in the outing. In his second outing only four days later, he pitched eight innings striking out eight but did not factor into the decision as he left the game trailing 2-1.

The T-Bones eventually won the game scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Davis was signed by the Kansas City T-Bones on August 17th as a non-drafted free agent out of Oklahoma State University (Stillwater, OK). He played two seasons at Oklahoma State after transferring from Arizona State University (Tempe, AZ) following a medical redshirt season in 2007. In two seasons with the Cowboys he had a 3-2 record appearing in 25 games, all but one appearance in relief. He began his collegiate career playing two years at Seward County Community College (Liberal, KS
