
JackHammers fall short in 5-3 loss

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA-The Joliet JackHammers (31-58) fought back for two runs in the 9th inning but could not complete the comeback in losing 5-3 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes (51-39) before 5,422 fans at Canwest Park on Monday night.
The JackHammers scored the first run of the game in the 1st inning against Winnipeg LHP Bill Pulsipher (4-1). CF Adam Klein (1-4) led off the inning with a double and moved to third base on an infield bunt single by 2B Rob Dahlberg (1-4).
SS Kevin Rios (1-3) grounded into a double play to score Klein from third base for a 1-0 Joliet lead.
The Goldeyes touched up Joliet RHP Luke O'Loughlin (1-2) for four runs in the 4th inning. SS Adam Frost (1-4) dropped down a bunt single and moved to second base when DH Juan Diaz (2-3) reached base on a four-pitch walk. RF Kevin West (1-3) lined a single to right field to load the bases.
3B Vince Harrison (3-4) lined a grand slam home run over the left field wall for a 4-1 Winnipeg lead.
Diaz smacked a solo home run in the 6th inning against RHP Derek Barrows to advance the score to 5-1.
O'Loughlin went five innings and allowed four runs on five hits to suffer the loss.
The JackHammers came very close to tying the game in the 9th inning. LHP Bill Pulsipher started the 9th inning and issued a leadoff walk to SS Kevin Rios (1-3). 1B Freddie Thon (2-4) followed with an RBI double to get the JackHammers within three runs at 5-2.
Winnipeg manager Rick Forney lifted Pulsipher out of the game in favor of RHP Chris Homer.
He responded by striking out RF Tim Alberts and gave up an RBI double to 3B Wally Backman, Jr. (1-4) off the right centerfield wall to score Thon to get the JackHammers within two runs at 5-3.
DH Mike Garcia (0-4) struck out and 2B Christian Lopez (0-4) grounded out to end the game.
Pulsipher got the win by tossing eight innings and allowing three runs on seven hits.
