Winning Streak Ends in 10

Pearl, MS - The M-Braves six-game winning streak came to an end in front of 2235 fans at Trustmark Park Wednesday night. A four-run seventh inning gave the D-Jaxx the lead and a run in the 10th gave them the win.

Both teams came out swinging Wednesday night as each put up a run in the top of the first. Callix Crabbe led off with a double for West Tenn and he came around to score on a single by Marshall Hubbard. Matt Young doubled off the right field wall to start the Braves' first and he would eventually score on a sac-fly by Jason Heyward. After one, the game was all square at one.

After Concepcion Rodriguez saved a couple of runs with a sprinting catch on the warning track in left field in the top of the third, the M-Braves took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Brandon Hicks drew a two-out walk and stole second to move into scoring position. Jason Heyward then singled to right-center to plate Hicks with the Braves second run of the night.

West Tenn got that run back plus one in the fourth. Matt Mangini's eighth homer of the year landed on top of the Farm Bureau Grill in right field. The two-run shot put the D-Jaxx back on top, 3-2.

Mississippi responded in the bottom of the inning with a little help from the D-Jaxx. With two outs and runners at first and second, Travis Jones reached on catcher's interference. Young then singled up the middle to score Greg Creek and JC Boscan to put the M-Braves back on top.

Creek struck again in the fifth. Heyward walked, Freddie Freeman singled and Rodriguez reached on a sac-bunt/fielder's choice. Creek shot a one-out single up the middle to score Heyward and Freeman and put the M-Braves on top, 6-3.

Mississippi's defense helped out the West Tenn offense in the seventh. Travis Garcia doubled and scored on a Mel Stocker single to cut the lead to 6-4. With runners on first and second, Hubbard hit a tapper back to the mound. Braves' reliever Jeff Lyman threw wild to first and both runners came around to score to tie the game at six. Hubbard moved all the way to third and he scored on a groundout by Johan Limonta. Heading to the bottom of the seventh, the D-Jaxx led 7-6.

Creek came through for the Braves again in the seventh. With two outs and runners at first and second, he shot a single through the middle to score Freeman from second. After seven, the two teams were tied at seven.

David Espinosa reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on a double by Garcia to put the Jaxx on top, 8-7, in the 10th.

Edgar Osuna gave up six runs, four earned, on 10 hits through six innings. Jeff Lyman allowed an unearned run in an inning and Kevin Gunderson threw one scoreless run. Bryan Dumesnil gave up the game-winning run in the 10th to fall to 1-7 on the year.

Brodie Downs gave up four runs, two earned, on seven hits in 3.2 innings and fell to 0-1 for the M-Braves. Mumba Rivera gave up two runs in 1.1 innings and Josh Fields gave up a run in two innings. Anthony Varvaro threw three shutout innings to earn his third W of 2009.

Mississippi and West Tenn play game four Thursday night at Trustmark Park at 7:05. The Braves will send righty Ryne Reynoso to the hill while the Diamond Jaxx will counter with Steve Bray.

Thursday, July 30th will be Chick-Fil-A Promotional Night as well as Thirsty Thursday when all 16 oz. soft drinks and domestic draft beer will be only $1.
