Mississippi Braves News Release

Pearl, MS - Jason Heyward starred at the plate and the M-Braves got excellent pitching to take both games of a doubleheader at Trustmark Park Tuesday night. The M-Braves win streak was extended to a season-high-tying six games with Heyward's two-run homer in game one and his walk-off single in game two.

Mississippi's offense went right to work in game one. Matt Young led off the M-Braves' first with a walk and scored easily on Brandon Hicks' 16th double. Willie Cabrera then singled home Hicks to give the M-Braves a 2-0 lead. Cabrera's single gave him a team-high 16-game hitting streak and a league-best 38 game on-base streak.

The D-Jaxx got on the board in the third when Mel Stocker singled and scored on a Greg Halman single. They only got one run after Thomas Hubbard hit into a double play. The M-Braves were aided when Greg Halman and Hubbard were called out on interference. West Tenn's Manager, Phil Plantier, was ejected for arguing the call between innings.

Jason Heyward got that run back in the bottom of the inning. After Hicks walked, Heyward belted his third homer of the year over the right-centerfield wall to put the M-Braves up 4-1.

Jose Ortegano allowed a run on five hits while fanning six through seven innings in his AA debut to improve to 1-0. It was only the Braves third complete game of 2009.

Luis Munoz gave up four runs in five innings and fell to 4-5 on the year. Phillipe Aumont threw one shutout inning in relief.

In game two, the two teams played to a scoreless tie until the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs, Heyward hit a broken-bat single past the pitcher that scored Kody Kirkland from third with the game-winner.

Tim Gustafson was nearly perfect through four innings. He allowed only one base runner via base on balls through four innings. Deunte Heath threw two shutout relief innings and Brett Butts got his fifth win of the year.

Dan Cortes shut the Braves out over six innings and left the game in a scoreless tie. Ricky Orta gave up a run in the seventh to fall to 3-2 on the year.

The two teams will play game three of this five-game series Wednesday night. The Braves will go with righty Ryne Reynoso while the D-Jaxx will counter with Brodie Downs.

On Wednesday the first 1,000 children through the gates will receive a free Hank Aaron Educational Magazine. It will also be Kids Night at Trustmark Park when children 14 and under get field level seats for only $2 and Fun Zone wristbands for only $5.
