July 29, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

Jacksonville, FL - Suns closer Matt Peterson was named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week for July 20-27.

Peterson had the most productive week of the season by a Southern League reliever, recording four dominant saves to increase his league-leading total to 24. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Peterson earned saves in each of his four appearances last week, giving him five saves since the All-Star break.

The Alexandria, LA, native faced just one batter over the minimum, throwing only 44 pitches in the process. He did not allow a hit last week and now has not surrendered a base hit in his last six appearances. On July 22, Peterson saved both games of a doubleheader sweep against West Tenn. The Suns swept the five-game series against the North Division-leading Diamond Jaxx and currently hold a three-game edge over Birmingham in the South.

Peterson, a native of Alexandria, LA, was a second-round draft pick in 2000 by the New York Mets out of Rapides (La.) High School. He signed with the Florida Marlins as a free agent in the fall of 2008 after seeing time across four levels of the Kansas City Royals organization during the 2008 season.
