Wings Wait Until Seventh to Score, Beat Columbus
June 2, 2006 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
Andres Torres' tripled to drive in the tying runs, then scored the lead run to key a seventh inning rally by the Red Wings in a 7-3 win over Columbus Friday night at Frontier Field. Chris Heintz and Gil Velazquez each had two hits for the Wings, and Pete Munro struck out six in seven innings to win his fourth game of the season.
In the top of the second, Carlos Pena led off with a walk for the Clippers. Pena advanced to third off a Nick Green double, and a sacrifice fly from Andy Cannizaro brought Pena home. Munro retired the next batter to end the inning. Columbus loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but couldn't add to the lead against Munro.
Clippers starter Kris Wilson entered Friday's game having allowed just one run in his last 29 innings pitched, with a season ERA of 1.96 - fourth best in the league. The Red Wings didn't post a hit until Jason Bartlett's infield single in the fourth inning. Josh Rabe followed with a hit, but Wilson quickly shut down the Wings to end the threat and the inning. Rochester had another shot at Wilson the next inning, putting runners at first and second with one out. Wilson struck out Torres and Jason Tyner to finish off the threat.
In the seventh, the Clippers put together back-to-back doubles from Cannizaro and Wil Nieves, with Cannizaro scoring to bring it to 2-0. A line drive off of Munro's glove from the next batter put two runners on base, but the deflection was enough to hold Nieves at second. The next three batters singled, however, resulting in one run and one very close play at the plate. A Jason Conti single to center was picked up by Tyner, who one-hopped a throw to Heintz for the tag at home and the second out. Munro struck out his sixth batter to end the bottom of the seventh.
It wasn't until the seventh that the Wings scored, but when they finally did they took the lead. Heintz led off with a single, then Garrett Jones walked to put two runners on. Velazquez was up next, and after a lengthy showdown with Wilson, Velazquez hit an ground rule double that bounced near the foul line and ended up in the right field lawn seats, bringing Heintz across the plate. With two on and one out, Torres came up and tripled to center field, scoring two more runs to tie the game 3-3. But the Wings weren't done there. Tyner hit a shallow fly ball to left, and the speedy Torres tagged and beat the throw home to put the Wings ahead for good.
Matt Childers came on to pitch the eighth for Columbus, and after a quick strikeout Childers surrendered a home run to Kevin West that went over the wall in left field. Heintz singled, then Jones tripled into the right field corner to plate Heintz; a throwing error on the play let Jones score to make it 7-3 Wings, and prompt Childers' exit from the game.
Henry Bonilla picked up the save for the Wings, pitching the final two innings and recording two strike outs while allowing just one hit.
