Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Red Wings bounced back from getting swept on Friday's doubleheader to beat Pawtucket 5-4 Saturday night at Frontier Field. Garrett Jones had three hits and three RBI to help spark an offense that mustered 10 hits. Brian Duensing (5-2) got the win after pitching seven innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four.
In the second inning Duensing ran into trouble after giving up a leadoff double to Brandon Moss. After striking out Kevin Cash, Ed Rogers walked to put runners on first and second base. Alex Prieto then followed with a two-run double to right-center to make it 2-0. David Murphy then slapped a slider to left field to give the Red Sox a 3-0 lead.
In the third the Wings capitalized on Abe Alvarez's control problems. After the first three batters walked to load the bases, their opportunity was nearly squandered when Tommy Watkins struck out and Darnell McDonald flew out to second. With two outs Jones came through with a three-run double to tie the game, giving him his team-leading 25th multi-hit game of the season.
The Wings began their hitting barrage in the fifth. With two outs Watkins singled to left field, and McDonald followed with a two-run home run to left-center to give Rochester a 5-3 lead. Jones then hit a blooper down the right field line that turned into a double, his third hit of the night.
Duensing settled down after a shaky start, not allowing a hit for three consecutive innings. In the sixth, however, he ran into trouble after giving up a single to Michael Tucker. Moss followed with a double to put both runners in scoring position with only one out. Duensing then forced Cash to fly out and Brian Buscher made a diving play on a ground ball by Rogers to get out of the inning unharmed.
Bobby Korecky replaced Duensing in the eighth. After giving up a leadoff single to Joe McEwing on a ball that McDonald misjudged in center field, Bobby Scales followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Tucker's RBI groundout made it 5-4, but Korecky got the next two batters out to end the threat after intentionally walking Moss with one out to load the bases.
In the ninth Korecky recorded his 21st save amidst great difficulty. Chad Spann led off with a double to center, and two batters later Murphy walked with one out. But McEwing grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Pawtucket starter Abe Alvarez (4-8) pitched five innings allowing five runs while striking out
