Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
EDINBURG, Texas - Despite racing out to a 4-1 lead, the âWings could not hold onto the lead in the later stages of the game, falling 10-6 to the McAllen Thunder.
The loss snaps the âWings' two game winning streak as they fall to 14-10 on the year.
McAllen, with the come from behind win, moves to 12-12.
Jumping out ahead first were the âWings as Leivi Ventura, with two outs, lined a double down the right field line. One pitch later, David Peralta knocked in a base hit to score Ventura as the âWings took an early 1-0 lead.
In his next at bat, Peralta extended the lead for the âWings in the top of the third with a two-RBI single that scored two runs to grab an early 3-0 lead.
McAllen and Rio Grande Valley would trade runs in their next bats, still providing the âWings with a three run lead at 4-1.
From there, it was all downhill for the WhiteWings.
Allowing five runs to cross the plate in the bottom of the fourth, the âWings would surrender the lead and never get it back. Adam Matos started the rally with an infield single that allowed Mike Goss to score. One batter later, Zach Mandelblatt knocked in another run. A walk from relief pitcher Eddie Dennis Jr. with the bases loaded tied the game at 4-4.
DJ Dixon would continue the rally as an RBI single gave McAllen their first lead of the game at 5-4. Goss, who led off the inning, capped the rally off with an RBI single which gave the Thunder a 6-4 lead.
However, despite giving up the lead, it wouldn't take long for the âWings to respond.
RBI singles from Edgar Trejo and Jonathan Fernandez in the top of the fifth would tie the score 6-6.
Yet just as fast as the WhiteWings tied the score, they would give McAllen the lead right back. A big four-run bottom of the fifth, highlighted by homeruns by Adam Matos and DJ Dixon, would provide a 10-6 lead, which was all McAllen needed to get the win.
Quinn Bright (1-0 4.50 ERA) earned the win while Andrew Dowl (0-1 5.91 ERA) was charged with the loss.
