Lake County Fielders News Release

Calgary, Alberta, Canada (June 17, 2011) - It took a doubleheader on Friday to wrap up the four-game series between the Lake County Fielders and the Calgary Vipers, with both teams picking up a victory in the double-dip.

The Fielders obliterated Calgary in the first game of the doubleheader, picking up a 15-4 victory in the seven-inning tilt. However, Calgary evened things in the second game, defeating Lake County by a score of 5-2. The split results put Lake County at 14-7 and Calgary at 11-10.

In game one, the Fielders had to come from behind after Calgary scored two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. After getting the first two outs of the top of the 2nd inning, Calgary starting pitcher Manny Ayala issued a walk to Patrick Brooks. The walk allowed Matthew Redding to step to the plate, and he made sure the walk to Brooks would hurt. Redding hit a deep drive over the wall in left-center field for his first home run of the season, tying the game at 2-2. Calgary would bring home a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning on a double-play groundout, to take a 3-2 lead, but it would be the last run they'd score for some time.

The Fielders got to Ayala as they began the top of the 3rd inning. Rex Rundgren hit a one-out single and was brought home immediately when Argelis Nunez crushed an Ayala pitch for a two-run homer, giving Lake County the lead at 4-3. The Fielders kept it going when a C.J. Ziegler walk and singles by the returning Brandon Newton and Matt Mansilla loaded the bases with one out. Following a Brooks strikeout, Redding stepped to the plate in a key situation and came up with the clutch hit. Redding hit a deep drive off the wall in centerfield, clearing the bases with a three-run double to give the Fielders a 7-3 lead.

The assault on Ayala continued in the top of the 4th inning when Quentin Luquette and Rundgren had back-to-back singles to start the inning. A walk to Nunez loaded the bases, but Ayala left the game with a 2-0 count to Ziegler. Ziegler faced reliever Rob Naegele, who issued a bases-loaded walk to the Fielders first baseman. Newton followed by driving in two more runs on a double. Mansilla brought home another on his groundout. And, Redding hit another double to plate the fifth and final run of the inning. The Fielders scored five runs in an inning for the second consecutive inning, as they took a 12-3 lead.

Lake County tallied three more runs in the top of the 5th inning on a Newton RBI single, an error by Calgary second baseman Jimmy Rohan off the bat of Brooks, and an RBI single by Redding. Redding ended the day with a career outing, going 4-for-4 with his first home run of the season, a pair of doubles, a single and a massive 7 RBI.

Needless to say, the Fielders held on to their 12-run lead, despite giving up a Viper run in the bottom of the 5th inning, to win game one of the doubleheader, 15-4. Fielders starting pitcher Vince Bongiovanni (2-0) picked up the win in his six innings of work.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Fielders struck first blood. Ziegler hit his team-high seventh home run of the season, as he lead off the top of the 2nd inning. Rundgren hit an RBI single in the top of the 3rd inning to give Lake County a 2-0 lead.

However, Calgary would score three runs off of Fielders starting pitcher Michael Moore (1-2). The Vipers managed to get the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the 3rd inning, and tallied some runs. Shortstop Wilver Perez hit a two-run single to right field to tie the game at 2-2. First baseman Andy Jenkins would give Calgary the lead on his sacrifice fly, to make it a 3-2 game.

Calgary added two more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning on a throwing error by Newton and an RBI single by Viper left fielder Drew Miller. But despite having the bases loaded with one out in the top of the 6th inning, the Fielders could not cut into the three-run deficit, taking a 5-2 loss in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Fielders will head back to Maui, where they began the 2011 season. Lake County were victorious in five games of the seven-game, season-opening series against the Maui Na Koa Ikaika. This time around, the Fielders will play five games during their four-day stay. The first game of the series begins on Saturday with a first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm local (11:35pm central). You can listen to the game on 1220 AM WKRS or online at fieldersbaseball.com or wkrs.com.
