Wings Acquire Veteran Talent and Athleticism in Players from Orlando Titans Dispersal Draft

August 6, 2010 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Philadelphia Wings News Release

The Philadelphia Wings have acquired Brendan Mundorf, Ryan Boyle, Steve Peyser, Jeff Bigas and Dan Cocoziello from their #5, #8, #12, #22 and #32 picks respectively in the Dispersal Draft of Orlando Titans Players held today at 1 p.m. Forwards Mundorf and Boyle and defensivemen Peyser and Bigas are standouts from the non-returning Orlando franchise in the 2010 season. They will bring strong veteran leadership to the Wings 2011 Team in coordination with the vision set forth by new, recently, named Head Coach John Tucker and Defensive Coordinator Tom Slate.

"We couldn't be happier with the way the draft went for the Wings." said Tucker, "To pick-up outstanding talent, but more importantly some great guys, is really a boost for our organization. In our opinion our needs were addressed extremely well with the addition of a strong left handed finisher in Mundorf to compliment the return of Merrick Thomson, and a tremendous playmaker and future 'quarterback' of our offense in Ryan Boyle - an addition that will support returning stars Athan Iannucci and Drew Westervelt."

Tucker continues, "The bonus for us in getting these players goes beyond the stats. Brendan Mundorf, for example, is probably the best attack-man in the field lacrosse world. Adding three US Team Players to our roster through a draft like this is really a huge bonus for the Wings."

Forward Brendan Mundorf joins the Wings for his fourth NLL season, having earned 28 goals and 31 assists over the course of the 2010 Orlando Titans season run. Most recently Mundorf was named to the FIL All World Team after the United States defeated Canada to claim the 2010 World Championships. "To have the ability to reunite Drew Westervelt with Brendan, his teammate at Maryland, is really a boost for us. They compliment each other very well", remarked Tucker. Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, Mundorf was a standout on the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Retrievers.

Moving into his seventh season with the NLL, veteran forward Ryan Boyle earned 21 goals, 39 assists, and 60 points in the 2010 Season, and recorded a 2009 season-high of seven goals against the Philadelphia Wings. He was named NLL Rookie of the Year in 2005 following a 42 point performance that season. His Princeton University career included three Final Four appearances, a National Championship, and selection to the All American Team all four years. Locally, Boyle assisted the MLL's Philadelphia Barrage to back-to-back MLL Championships in 2006 and 2007.

John Hopkins Alumni and defensiveman Stephen Peyser enters his third season of NLL play with the Philadelphia Wings with a strong looseball and faceoff background (an over 60% average in his NLL career). Tucker calls Peyser one of the most "talented athletes in the NLL, a great faceoff guy, and an intelligent player who can cover both ends of the field." The two-time All American from John Hopkins (2005-08) helped pace the school to an overall record of 49-15 (.766 winning percentage), and a pair of National Championships (2005, 2007) during which time he handled the majority of face-offs.

Moving into this third year with the NLL, defensiveman Jeff Bigas played in 12 games and handed out three assists during the 2010 season. He was a three-time Division III All American selection at Salisbury Maryland, during which time he led his team to a National Championship his senior year (2005). The Wings also drafted defensiveman Dan Cocoziello, a Princeton Alumni and All American from New Jersey.
