Washington Stealth Re-Sign Two More NLL Veterans
August 6, 2010 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Washington Stealth News Release
Everett, Wash. - The Washington Stealth announced today that two more players from the 2010 National Lacrosse League Championship squad will be back at training camp for 2011. Forward Tom Johnson and Defenseman Travis Gillespie have signed contracts for 2011 that are pending league approval.
Johnson will be entering his fifth NLL season, all with the Stealth. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound lefty battled a knee injury prior to the 2010 campaign, but came back to appear in seven regular season games for the Stealth last season. He recorded 17 points on nine goals and eight assists. The previous season, he set career highs with 14 games played, 20 goals, 13 assists, 33 points and 64 loose balls.
"Tom brings another dimension to our offense and we are thrilled to have him back healthy for 2011," said Stealth General Manager Doug Locker. "He's a big, strong, athletic player and we believe he will be a valuable contributor this coming season."
Gillespie is a seven-year NLL vet gearing up for his third season with the Stealth. In each of the last two seasons, Gillespie had his year cut short due to injury. He played in seven games in 2009 before a leg injury sidelined him for the remainder of the year. In the opening game of 2010, Gillespie went down with a hand injury that required season-ending surgery. But when the Coquitlam fire fighter has been on the floor, he's proven to be a valuable commodity for the defending champions.
"We are really happy to have Travis back this coming season," said Locker. "He has been haunted by injuries the past two seasons that have limited his play, but Chris Hall and I believe in his ability and when healthy, as he is now, provides us with a proven veteran in our lineup. We are looking forward to having him back."
With the return of Johnson and Gillespie, the Stealth has re-signed eleven players from the 2010 Championship season. They begin their title defense in January 2011, with training camp expected to start in November. Season tickets for the 2011 season start at just $120 for a ten-game package and can be purchased at www.stealthlax.com or by calling 877-MY-75-TIX.
