Rush Gain Greer and Alrich in Orlando Dispersal Draft
August 6, 2010 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Edmonton Rush News Release
Edmonton, AB---Edmonton Rush General Manager/Head Coach Derek Keenan announced that the club has selected two players in today's National Lacrosse League Dispersal Draft of the Orlando Titans roster.
The order of the draft was designated by the teams' finish during the 2010 NLL regular season.
With the eighth overall pick, the Rush selected defender Bill Greer, a nine-year veteran of NLL play. The 29-year-old won a Champion's Cup with the 2007 edition of the Rochester Knighthawks and played in the 2009 Champion's Cup final with the New York Titans.
"Bill is an excellent defender who excels in transition," noted Keenan. "He is a very versatile player who fits in with our up-tempo style of play. He's a solid and smart defender with good speed and decision-making skills and a good touch around the net. Bill also has tremendous attributes in character and leadership. He will be an outstanding fit in our dressing room."
The six-foot-one, 185-pounder played in 14 regular-season games for the Titans last season, notching seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points plus 94 loose balls. His point total was the highest among Orlando defenders and the second-best offensive output of Greer's pro career.
In 117 career games, Greer has 47 goals and 76 assists for 123 points plus six points in nine career playoff games. Prior to joining Orlando, Greer played for New York, Anaheim, Arizona, and Columbus, which had chosen Greer ninth overall in the 2001 NLL Entry Draft.
With the 17th overall pick, the Rush selected Matt Alrich, a forward with six years' experience in the NLL. In 13 games last season with Orlando, the 28-year-old set career-high in goals (10), assists (nine) and points (19) with 26 loose balls.
Previous stints with New York and San Jose have resulted in career totals of 21 goals and 33 assists for 54 points in 82 regular-season games for Alrich, a six-foot-three, 220-pounder. Alrich also has racked up six points in seven playoff games including a trip to the Champion's Cup final with New York in 2009.
Alrich, originally San Jose's third-round pick in the 2004 NLL Entry Draft, plays professionally outdoors with the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse. He was First Team All-Colonial Athletic Conference in his senior at the University of Delaware as well as being the team's most valuable player.
"Matt is a two-way player and was the best player available when our second-round choice came up," said Keenan. "We will see where he fits in our overall scheme."
The Colorado Mammoth selected goaltender Matt Vinc first overall. For full Orlando Titans dispersal draft results please visit the National Lacrosse League website: http://www.nll.com/article.php?id=4590
