Wingnuts Throttle Diablos to Finish Sweep

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts completed a three-game sweep of the El Paso Diablos, winning 19-2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday evening. Wichita set a new team record for runs in a single game for the second time in nine days, and for a third time in 10 games this season, all nine of the Wingnuts starters collected at least one hit.
The Wingnuts scored five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-0 lead and never looked back. Juan Richardson was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a walk to Jorge Delgado. Josh Workman singled home the first run of the game with a groundball through the right side. Michael Conroy followed with a line drive single to right that scored Delgado. With runners on first and second and still no outs, Jeff Stevens laid down a sacrifice attempt to the left side of the infield. Diablos' starter Wardell Starling barehanded the ball, but threw over the reach of third baseman Martin Parra. The errant throw allowed Workman to score and gave the Wingnuts a 3-0 lead.
Evan Button followed Stevens' at bat in the second with a double off the right field fence that plated Conroy with the Wingnuts' fourth run. Josh Horn capped off the rally with an RBI single through the right side.
Richardson homered well over the left-center field wall leading off the third, and then the Wingnuts added two more against Starling in the fourth on a Ryan Patterson RBI single and a wild pitch thrown by reliever Alfredo Caballero.
Starling lasted 3.2 innings and was charged with the loss, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits.
Wichita scored six more runs in the fifth, highlighted by two-run hits from Horn and Patterson. Jorge Cortes and Richardson added RBI in the frame as well.
Wingnuts' starter Ryan Hinson threw six shutout innings to earn his second win in as many starts this season. Hinson scattered four hits and struck out eight while allowing just one walk.
After El Paso scratched out a run in the seventh against David Miller, Thomas Fitzgerald doubled home a run in the bottom half to make it 15-1. Two batters later, Workman singled through the right side to drive in two more.
The Diablos scored another run in the eighth, and again, the Wingnuts answered back with two in their half. Patterson and Cortes knocked in runs with outs to make it 19-2.
Eric Gilliland pitched a scoreless ninth to finish the game.
