More Back Than Forth

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Sox went back and forth with the Shreveport-Bossier Captains on Sunday night, but the Captains were the one's that came out on top 9-8 in front of 6,142 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.

Sox reliever Austin Chambliss (0-1) got the loss, despite allowing just one run in three innings of relief. Captains reliever Jake McCarter (1-0) got the win, allowing one runs off two hits in the effort. Shreveport-Bossier closer Dan Griffin got his third save by closing out the Sox in the ninth.

Amarillo took the early lead in the first as Matt Tucker doubled, went to third on an error and scored on a Cyle Hankerd groundout. Lee Cruz followed with a walk, went to second on a Benji Johnson single and scored on a throwing error for a 2-0 first inning Sox lead. The Captains responded with a two-run second in which an error scored both runs to tie the game 2-2.

The Sox responded with a three-run second as Tim Alberts, Chris Nash, Jason White and Adam De La Garza led off with singles, while Tucker hit a sacrifice fly to score White for a three-run lead. Shreveport-Bossier countered with a three-run third inning as three runs scored off three hits to tie the game 5-5.

Amarillo retook the lead in the third as Alberts tripled and scored on a Nash RBI single. White and De La Garza followed with singles to score another run for a 7-5 advantage.

The Captains tied the game in the fifth with a two-run homerun from Uriak Marquez, and took the lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Robert Perry for an 8-7 Shreveport-Bossier lead.

The Sox tied the game in the sixth as White doubled, went to third on an error and scored on a Tucker groundout for a tie game.

In the eighth inning, Shreveport-Bossier's Alex Cowart tripled with one out and scored on a Joey Gathright fielder's choice. Sox manager John Harris was thrown out arguing the play at the plate to score Cowart. Amarillo put runners on third base in the eighth and ninth innings, but couldn't bring them home as the Sox were defeated by the Captains 9-8.

With the loss, the Sox fall to 2-8 while the Captains improve to 6-4. Following an off day, Amarillo will take on the Sioux Falls Pheasants on Tuesday for the first game of the three-game set at 7:05pm, with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show set to begin at 5:50pm on Ustream, via www.amarillosox.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
