Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
AMARILLO, TX---Pitching has not been the Amarillo Sox' strongsuit through the early part of the 2011 season. The team had compiled a 9.26 ERA through eight games, allowed a league-high 89 runs and been tagged for nine runs on 13 hits against the Captains in game one of the series between Amarillo and Shreveport-Bossier. But Sox starter Ryan Mitchell (1-0) turned things around at least for a night with a terrific pitching performance, striking out nine Captains en route to a 5-2 Amarillo win.
Amarillo's Adam de la Garza began a superb offensive night with a lead off home run to left field to start the bottom of the first off Captains starter Richard Salazar (1-1). It was the first time this year the Captains had allowed a homer to start the game. De la Garza would single and double in his next two at bats, finishing the game 3-5 and a triple short of the cycle.
The Sox would extend their lead in the bottom of the third. Jason White led off the inning with a double and would move to third on de la Garza's single. After Matthew Tucker hit into a fielder's choice, White would score on a Cyle Hankerd single to right. Bryan Sabatella mishandled the ball in the outfield, allowing Tucker to score from first.
The Captains got on the board in the fourth when Andres Rodriguez, who had doubled to start the frame, scored on a throwing error by Sox second baseman Tucker.
From there, Amarillo's Mitchell went into shut down mode, striking out seven batters over the next four innings, and retiring nine in a row at one point. He pitched eight innings, allowing seven hits and two runs, neither of them earned. He struck out nine and walked one.
Shreveport-Bossier would plate one in the eighth but it wasn't enough as Amarillo's Corey Bass came in in the ninth and picked up his first save. Bass allowed a lead off single to Mike Provencher but then retired Brian Peterson on a strike out looking and got Joe Urtuzuastegui to ground into a game-ending 4-6-3 double play.
The Captains take on Amarillo in the rubber game of their three-game series Sunday night at National Bank Sox Stadium at 6:05 p.m. Osvaldo Rodriguez takes the hill for Shreveport-Bossier against Amarillo's Travis Lawlor.
