Wingnuts Stage Late Comeback

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (13-6) defeated the El Paso Diablos (5-13) 5-4 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Wingnuts overcame a pair of three-run deficits, and won the game on Abel Nieves' two-out, RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, David Amberson and Jared McDonald opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Ryan Khoury sliced El Paso's lead to 4-2 with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Stephen Yoo doubled to right-center leading off the bottom of the eighth and went to third on Nieves' single to left. Colt Loehrs followed with a pinch-hit double off the right field wall that scored Yoo to make it 4-3. Amberson tied the game when he drove in Nieves with a sacrifice fly to center field.

John Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk in the ninth and took second on C.J. Ziegler's groundout to short. Two batters later, Nieves drove the ball over the head of Diablos' right fielder Brian Joynt to score Rodriguez with the winning run.

Josh Dew earned the win in relief with a perfect top of the ninth. Lincoln Holdzkom worked a perfect eighth for Wichita.

The Diablos took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third when Maikol Gonzalez, Jose Garcia, and Joynt drew three straight walks. Gonzalez came home on a wild pitch, while Garcia scored on a groundball to shortstop from Jonathan Cisneros. Mitch Einertson singled to left to drive in Joynt.

Nieves lifted a sacrifice fly to left field in the bottom of the fourth to get the Wingnuts on the board. Cisneros hit an RBI double in the next half inning to re-extend El Paso's lead to three runs.

Junior Guerra started for the Wingnuts and took a no-decision. Guerra allowed four earned runs on five hits in seven innings. Guerra walked seven and struck out five.

Ryan Bean started for El Paso and also took a no-decision. Bean allowed one earned run on four hits with five walks and two strikeouts in six innings.

Mike Koons took the loss for El Paso, allowing one earned run in one and one-third relief innings.

Nieves finished with three hits for a second straight night.
