Wingnuts Blank Diablos to Earn Sweep

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (14-6) shutout the El Paso Diablos (5-14) 1-0 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Thursday night.

Jon Link and three Wingnuts' relievers combined on a seven-hit shutout that gave Wichita a four-game sweep. Wichita's pitching staff allowed just 20 total base hits in the four-game series.

Wichita scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs and no one on base, Jared McDonald struck a ground rule double over the center field wall. Ryan Khoury followed with an RBI single through the left side.

Link worked six and two-thirds shutout innings, allowing six hits. Link walked four and struck out five to earn his fourth win of the year. Link stranded 10 Diablos on base, including seven in scoring position.

Nick Walters recorded the final out of the seventh and first out of the eighth before giving way to Lincoln Holdzkom. Holdzkom retired both batters to face him on a combined four pitches. Josh Dew worked a perfect top of the ninth to earn his fourth save.

Khoury had two hits in the win while David Amberson extended his hitting streak to seven games.

David Casillas took the loss for the Diablos, allowing one earned run on five hits in seven innings. Casillas walked four and struck out nine.

It was Wichita's second shutout of 2013 and their first in a 1-0 game since blanking El Paso in game one of a double header at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on August 27th of last year.

The Wingnuts open a three-game series against the St. Paul Saints at Midway Stadium on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Chris Smith faces right-hander Wes Roemer. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 92.7 KWME and worldwide at www.kleyam.com
